Why I released 26 prisoners

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

The furor over the pardons I recently granted as governor of Mississippi initially focused on numbers. I would like to set the record straight. People thought — incorrectly — that I had let 215 prisoners out of jail because the secretary of state reported that many people received clemency. Read full article > >

Salvation Army volunteers pass organization’s 36-hour bell-ringing record

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO — Salvation Army volunteers around the nation have beaten the charitable organization’s 36-hour record for continuous hand bell ringing without food or sleep. And at least six of them, including a volunteer in San Francisco, were still ringing away next to their red kettles on Saturday morning — more than 12 hours after the record was broken. Average rate on 30-year fixed mortgage ties low of 3.94 pct.; 15-year also hits record

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

WASHINGTON — The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage has dropped to 3.94 percent, the record low set in October. Low rates offer a historic opportunity for those who can afford to buy or refinance. Still, many people either can’t take advantage of the record-low rates or have already done so. The rate on the 30-year home loan fell from 3.99 percent the previous week, Freddie Mac said Thursday. This week’s 3.94 percent average matches the lowest on records dating to the 1950s. ‘Super PAC’ American Crossroads seeks permission to feature candidates in ads

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

American Crossroads, the largest of a new generation of political interest groups, is seeking to use a loophole in campaign laws to do something that has occupied a gray area of election law: produce advertisements featuring federal candidates and officeholders. That would be a step that Crossroads and other “super PACs” have not taken so far. But the conservative Crossroads says it is just following a precedent set by the Democratic Party, which has spent at least a half-million dollars in recent months on ads featuring Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) talking about his record. Read full article > >

‘Terra Nova’ and ‘Lost’: A list of the similarities

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Let us state, for the record, that “ Terra Nova ” and “ Lost ” are not the same show. For example, in “Terra Nova,” everyone appears to know the answer to the question “ Guys, where are we ?” Thus far on “Terra Nova,” no one has miraculously regained an ability to walk . And, at least in the pilot for the dinosaur-filled Fox drama, none of the characters routinely refer to their fellow Terra Novians using clever, pop culture-infused nicknames . Read full article > >

‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1’: The full trailer arrives

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

The first full trailer for “ The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 ” has been released. No, this is not another teaser where we mostly see the back of Kristen Stewart’s head as she walks down the aisle. (Although, for the record, we get that again here, too.) This is two minutes and 30 seconds of the lovely pasty-whiteness of the Swan-Cullen wedding, hot and heavy honeymoon action between Bella and Edward (some of which we saw during the Comic-Con “Breaking Dawn” panel ) and, yes, Bella’s freakishly expanding baby bump.
