Its that time of the year again–Americans are getting ready for football. In a few months NFL teams will be opening training camp and college football teams starting practice. Up north, however, the footballs are already flying as pro football is in full swing up in Canada with the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Most Americans dont realize that the CFL has a lengthy and storied history. The league itself has been around since\’30, and the Canadian Football championship–known as the Grey Cup–has been contended since\’09. More recently, American fans are aware that a number of NFL stars got their start in the CFL including Doug Flutie, Jim Kelly, and Jeff Garcia.
While the CFL plays football at the highest professional level of competition outside of the NFL, there are a few differences in the game:
The most obvious difference is the football itself–the CFL football is longer and fatter than the NFL ball. The CFL still has their goal posts on the goal line, which the NFL moved to the back of the end zone years ago. The field is 10 yards longer and 12 yards wider than the NFL field, and the CFL end zones are 20 yards deep instead of the NFL\’s 10 yards.
CFL teams are allowed an extra offensive player (a wide receiver), and on defense they\’re allowed an extra defensive back. This means that 12 players can be on the field at one time as opposed to 11 in the NFL. CFL football also differs in that teams only have three downs to gain ten yards, as opposed to four in US football. The phrase \”two and out\” is as commonplace in CFL football as is \”three and out\” in the US game.
A major difference in the scoring is the \’single\’ which awards CFL teams one point for a kick–usually a punt or missed field goal–that lands in the end zone. This will frequently produce partial game scores of 1-0 or 1-1 that are impossible in the US game.
Of all the rule differences between the NFL and CFL the one that has the most significance on the game isnt enforced on the field; its enforced in the GMs office. Canadians are big on laws and rules to protect their national identity–thats why their TV and radio stations are required to devote a certain percentage of their airplay to Canadian content. That has led to a number of Canadian-only media stars both good (The Tragically Hip, Sloan) and bad (Avril Lavigne, early 90s white rapper Snow). The CFL has a similar rule which requires that\’ of the 40 players on a roster must be Canadian born. This keeps the CFL from becoming a de facto NFL developmental league, and helps maintain its unique identity.
Perhaps the greatest misunderstanding is that the average NFL fan looks at the rules of the Canadian game with more players, a wider field, and fewer downs and concludes that the game is a wide open shootout similar to Arena Football. Thats not really the case–you\’ll see some offensive battles but most games end up with final score totals in the mid to high 40s. In Arena Football, youll frequently see teams with potent offenses enforcing their will over and over again against teams with porous defenses. You don\’t see that too often in the CFL. The rules may be different, but as is the case in American pro football you need a solid rushing game and a stout defense to win games and championships.
The requirement of native born players making up 50% of a CFL roster also results in a much more even distribution of talent across the league. Certainly there are good teams and bad teams, but the end result is greater parity than is found in the NFL.
The CFL isn\’t in a financial position to draw the top level US players away from the NFL or, in most cases, even a NFL practice or developmental squad. While some US players are uniquely suited to the CFL style of play, most of the US players that end up there are of a similar talent level as to that seen in Arena Football.
Despite some major differences, the NFL and CFL have more in common–they\’re both high level, intensely competitive professional football leagues. Once you understand the rule differences and the unique and fascinating history of the CFL, it is a very enjoyable brand of professional football to watch.

Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings are undefeated no more. The Pittsburgh Steelers’ used a couple of big plays from their defense in the fourth quarter to break open a close game and defeat the Vikings by a final score of 27-17. Favre put up decent yardage in the loss, throwing for 334 yards but had no touchdowns and an interception.
NFL pointspread players who backed the Steelers as -6 home favorites were rewarded with the cover. Pittsburgh had only covered one of their first six games heading into the contest, and the win improved their record against the number to 2-5. Minnesota dropped to 4-3 against the spread with the setback.
The Steelers largely shut down Minnesota’s rushing game, holding Adrian Peterson to 69 yards. Pittsburgh safety Ryan Clark underscored his team’s dominance against the run:
“That’s the biggest point of the game. You have the best running back in the world and you don’t give it to him. They’re saying they can’t beat us running, and that’s a major statement when you have the guy they have back there.”
Favre gave a mealy mouthed justification for the loss in his postgame interview:
“There were a lot of what ifs, a lot of reasons we didn’t win. The red zone was one of them. They’re physical, and they were as good as we thought they’d be. … When I came here and looked at our schedule and saw the Steelers game, I went, ‘Oh-h-h.’ ”
Favre has only thrown three interceptions in a Vikings’ uniform, but #3 was a costly one as it was returned by Steelers’ Keyaron Fox for a touchdown to put the game out of reach as Minnesota was driving for a potential game tying field goal. Afterwards, Fox recalled the play:
“Brett tried to force it in there and the running back bobbled it and slipped out of his hands and it fell into my lap. I had just run across the field after Peterson and I was winded, so it felt like it was 100-plus yards.”
The Vikings now face another big game next week as they head to Favre’s old stomping grounds in Green Bay for a battle with the Packers. It’ll be Favre’s first appearance at his old home in an enemy uniform. The Vikings will then have a bye weekend before hosting the lowly Detroit Lions on November 15. Pittsburgh will enjoy a bye week this week before returning to action on Monday, November 9th facing the Denver Broncos on the road.

When you first begin your flying endeavors you may find yourself, feeling nauseated to the point of actually being sick. You probably will put this down to being beginner?s jitters or nervousness. It very well could be but may very well be motion sickness. It is a very common occurrence and you have most often heard the term carsick. This is where every time an individual travels in a car they feel sick to their stomach. It comes in varying degrees and is not just restricted to automobiles. It can be caused from any type of motion most often associated with travel. Perhaps by car, plane or sea an attack of this can strike. It really is not a disease or a virus, it is simply our movement perception becomes mixed up. The inner ear consists of semi circular canals that contain fluid. In motion, this fluid is mixed up and cannot discern between major movement and just a slight movement.
If you are wondering just how appropriate it is to use the word nausea, in Greek it means seasickness. Good indication it has been around a long time. Most often unfortunately, the nausea does not subside on its own. Most often, the sufferer will end up being sick to their stomach. Here are some other tried and true methods you may want to partake in, if you are not finding any solutions.
1. Avoid sudden movements by trying to keep your mode of travel smooth. Also, try to avoid any type of reading. Turbulence is certainly going to be unpleasant.
2. As strange as it may sound attempt to eat a decent meal two hour before flying. It works for some but not for others, it is a try and sees type of treatment. In any event do not over eat. Eat light and sensibly. 3. Try and get as much fresh air as possible.
4. Ginger has long been known for its anti nausea effects. It is often a natural remedy use for morning sickness in expectant women. There are many variations of ginger available and you could try them all to see which works best for you. It is also available in pill form as well, although the natural is purported as being the best. Simply make yourself some ginger tea from fresh ginger root.
5. Do yourself a big favor and abstain from alcohol the night before. A hang over is bad enough, but you don?t want to experience a hang over with motion sickness while you are piloting a plane.
6. looking straight ahead at the horizon may help but as the pilot, you are not able to do this.
Finally, no matter what method you choose, always carry a sick bag with you for those unpreventable moments.

I’ve been eating candy since I was a kid. While I don’t have as much now as I did then, I still have a sweet tooth that begs for attention once in a while. Sometimes, I think about the candies from my tough that no longer exist.
While some of the ones that I’m thinking of are lesser known, there are those that were seemingly really popular and I’m surprised to see that they were discontinued. A few of the following varieties of candy that I’m about to mention fit that very bill.
Bonkers candy. Remember this one? It was a chewy candy. Really chewy in fact. There was one fruit flavor on the outside of the candy, with a second color and flavor on the inside.
These were really enjoyable and came in flavors like watermelon, grape, and even chocolate. They disappeared quickly in the ’80s, before making a surprise return to the scene during the late ’90s and then fading yet again. I haven’t seen these in stores in years.
Bubble gum was seemingly more popular 20 years ago than it is today. One of the most prominent forms of gum that I remember is the kind that came inside a mini juice box. There was a face on the front, and they were offered in a few flavors.
The gum came in the form of small pellets, and people would essentially sip it from the box as if they were drinking juice. They would chew it from there, of course.
Let’s make a foray into the chocolate world, looking at one of the bigger players of the ’80s. The Mars bar was right up there with Milky Ways and the other big players. Somehow, they faded into oblivion somewhere along the way. What happened to the Mars bar?

Not all wetsuits are designed to withstand the same type of movement. Some are built for heavy use of the knees and shoulders while others are more restrictive in the joint areas. The panels that a wetsuit is made from are stitched and glued together, creating more flexibility. Panels that come together in high motion areas can cause additional chafing, which can be very uncomfortable.
Wetsuits are not made to keep all of the water out. As water builds inside the suit, it warms up and increases skin temperature. It also improves buoyancy and provides protection from things like stinging nettles.
There are numerous different sports that require wetsuits when the water (or the air) becomes too chilly for swimming but you still have enough warmth to keep you in the game. Surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, jet skiing, water skiing and wake boarding, and of course, swimming are just a few of the main sports that will find you picking through your options early and late in the season.
Remember that wearing a suit is not necessarily just a spring and fall endeavor. Many water enthusiasts up north need some sort of suit all year long. Sometimes southern destinations require nothing more than a shorty in February. Every variable factor comes into play when choosing the right suit.
Full suits are very popular, as they come in various weights to help you choose the right one for you. It provides your entire body with coverage and can be used with hoods. If you need extra protection you can use gloves and booties to add to the set up. The thicker, or heavier, the wetsuit is the more protection from cold you will receive.
On the other hand, you might have days when all you really need is warmth for your core. A shorty or spring suit can offer you the valuable protection necessary and offer you freedom of the arms and legs. These do come with various options, so shop scrupulously. Sometimes a shorty will offer you a three quarter sleeve, but many sports have movements that can not tolerate this feeling of constriction.
The long legged but sleeveless options are referred to as “Johns” or “Janes.” These suits are good for many different sports, but most people find them to be a great spring or fall suit. Their sleeveless design allows you to choose between going free and using a secondary wetsuit “shirt” to start your day. You can remove the secondary covering as the day warms up.
You will probably need more than one style and one weight when it comes to the perfect suit. You will have days when a shorty is perfect and then there will be days when a heavy, thick full suit with a hood is called for. Having multiple options extends your season and your session options. With every suit, you have to ensure that you have chosen well and have a back up on hand. Participating in a water sport with a suit that is too light can hamper your ability to perform well and can hamper your ability to swim to safety if needed.

While there have been many great tennis players over the course of the last few decades, such as Agassi, Sampras, McEnroe, and others, I believe that women have been just as great.
I was thinking about the best women’s players in the history of the sport, and realized that so many of them happen to be very recent players. It was really hard to make this list, but I’m going to list the seven elite women’s players that come to mind, saving the best for the end.
7. Venus Williams. With all of her Wimbledon wins and some other slams, there’s no denying how great she’s been. When she’s at the top of her game, she can beat sister Serena, which says it all right there.
While Venus Williams is a legend, Justine Henin was just a little better. Beating Venus on many occasions, this small Belgian warrior has 9 slams. The difference between Henin and Venus is the fact that she won these over a 9 year period.
The next player on my list is one who I do believe should have been ranked higher, if not for a very unfortunate event. Monica Seles was the best woman in the world in her young prime, even beating the likes of Steffi Graf with ease. Unfortunately, a fanatical lunatic decided to stab her during a match, which effectively ruined her career.
It’s really hard to put Chris Evert here at four, but that’s how competitive this field is. With’ career slams, she is simply one of the best to ever play.
After Seles is the other Williams sister, as Serena now has more grand slams, not to mention the fact that she’s younger than Venus. The last few years have been dominated by Serena ever since Henin retired, and she still has a handful of good years ahead of her.
2. Martina Navratilova. What an outstanding career she had, and she just never seemed to go away.’ grand slams and a shining career.
Steffi Graf is known to many as the best woman to ever play the sport. It’s hard to argue against these people considering her amazing 22 career grand slam victories.
