The ultimate goal of manufacturers who are offering new, less-concentrated infant versions of the painkiller acetaminophen is to provide sick babies with sufficient relief without risking overdose. But in the short term, the changes may perplex parents. In response to incidents in which infants have been severely sickened or died after receiving overdoses of the painkiller and fever reducer, many manufacturers have voluntarily offered less-concentrated versions of their products. The higher-dose versions were considered beneficial they required babies to swallow less liquid. But in some cases babies consuming too much of the over-the-counter medication suffered liver failure, which can be fatal. Read full article > >

BAGHDAD — In a sign that Iraq’s political crisis is worsening, Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki demanded Wednesday that officials in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region hand over Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi so Hashimi can face charges that he enlisted personal bodyguards to run a hit squad. Interstates closed by storm crawling across Great Plains reopen, relieve holiday travelers

TOPEKA, Kan. — Holiday travelers were breathing a sigh of relief Wednesday after a snowstorm that closed interstates across the Great Plains moved out of the region, allowing crews to plow away snow drifts and let stranded motorists leave roadside hotels. The storm was blamed for at least two fatal car accidents as it crawled from eastern New Mexico and Colorado through the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma and Kansas. The fierce winds and heavy snowfall closed several major roadways before weakening Tuesday as the weather moved into Missouri and toward the Great Lakes. Read full article > >

Wal-Mart has agreed to fund job – training programs, open hiring centers and make $21 million in charitable contributions in the District in a package of community benefits as the retailer prepares to open several stores in the city. In the deal , the chain will seek small- and minority-owned businesses in the District for construction of its stores; create and fund training programs aimed at populations suffering from high unemployment rates; and open hiring centers in the wards where the chain opens stores.
