Evangelicals Dominate Mississippi, Alabama Exit Polls

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Early exit poll results show that 8 in every 10 voters in Alabama and Mississippi call themselves white, evangelical Christians, and more than 4 of whom say they'll back candidates who share their religious beliefs. While this is of course good news for Santorum, the numbers don't bode as well for Romney, who lost primaries this year in five states where evangelicals accounted for more than 50 percent of the voters. The demographics of Mississippi and Alabama resemble those in other Southern states where both Santorum and Gingrich have done better than Romney.

PBS’s ‘The Amish’: In this world, but not of it

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

It can be a real problem when the people you’re making a documentary about are forbidden by their religious code from appearing in it. The Amish of PBS’s beautiful and gently rendered film “The Amish” (airing Tuesday night) are mainly seen in groups, from a distance. When they tell their individual stories, we hear audio only; the camera is not permitted to film them directly or intimately. Read full article > >

Overreach: Obamacare vs. the Constitution

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Give him points for cleverness. President Obama’s birth control “ accommodation ” was as politically successful as it was morally meaningless. It was nothing but an accounting trick that still forces Catholic (and other religious) institutions to provide medical insurance that guarantees free birth control, tubal ligation and morning-after abortifacients — all of which violate church doctrine on the sanctity of life. Angelina Jolie’s movie, reminding us this is no time to turn inward

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

We are coming up on bad times. Nationalism is surging throughout Europe. In the Arab world, spring is suddenly winter and the sects, the tribes, the clans, the religious, the very religious and the military are taking a step back, eyeing one another for the coming rumble. Now comes a strong and wholly gripping film by Angelina Jolie about the 1990s’ ugly war in Bosnia. I do not know if it’s about what has passed or what is coming. I fear the latter. Jon Huntsman, the reasonable Republican

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

MANCHESTER, N.H. As Republican presidential aspirants assembled Tuesday night in Nevada for their umpteenth debate, it was clearer than ever that Republicans have gotten exactly what they had coming. Their nominating process, controlled by the religious warriors and anti-government agitators who dominate straw polls, has reached its logical conclusion: The hottest candidate in the field is Herman Cain, a fast-food tycoon who never heard of neoconservatism, has never held office, has no foreign policy and a three-digit number for a domestic policy, and likes to joke about electrocuting illegal immigrants . By contrast, Jon Huntsman, governor, ambassador, the man who in a normal political environment would be the most qualified and formidable candidate in the race, wasn’t even on the stage. The Pentagon will permit military chaplains to perform same-sex marriage in states that legally recognize gay marriage, it said Friday.
