FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A babysitter and trusted neighbor has confessed that he bludgeoned a 9-year-old Indiana girl to death with a brick then dismembered her, hiding her head, hands and feet at his home and dumping the rest of her remains nearby, police said Tuesday. Allen County sheriff’s investigators said in an affidavit that 39-year-old Michael Plumadore admits he killed Aliahna Lemmon on Thursday. Read full article > >

The Air Force, already under fire for mishandling the remains of war dead at the mortuary in Dover , is being urged to seek an outside review of its investigators in response to criticism that the service fell short in its effort to hold people accountable. Earlier this week, the Air Force announced that it had disciplined three officials after investigating whistleblowers’ allegations of “gross mismanagement” at the mortuary. An independent government watchdog agency set up to protect whistleblowers said, however, that the Air Force had managed to “stop just short of accepting accountability.” Read full article > >

Wind farms under fire for bird kills

Six birds found dead recently in Southern California’s Tehachapi Mountains were majestic golden eagles. But some bird watchers say that in an area where dozens of wind turbines slice the air they were also sitting ducks. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating to determine what killed the big raptors, and declined to divulge the conditions of the remains. But the likely cause of death is no mystery to wildlife biologists who say they were probably clipped by the blades of some of the 80 wind turbines at the three-year-old Pine Tree Wind Farm Project , operated by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Yvonne McKoy’s daughter surprised her after church one Sunday in December with the news that she planned to marry. Then her daughter moved away, and she never saw her again. On Thursday, police in Durham, N.C., explained why. Antoinetta Yvonne McKoy, 27, was found dead Wednesday, her remains wrapped in a plastic bag unearthed by a plumbing crew behind a house. Durham police have charged seven people in the slaying of the District native. One of them, Pete Lucas Moses Jr., 27, was her fiance, Yvonne McKoy said.
