Income inequality is increasing across much of the developed world, a trend that will continue unless governments move aggressively to arrest it, according to a report released Monday by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The widening gap between rich and poor is being driven in part by a growing disparity in wages, as skilled workers command a disproportionate share of the bounty made possible by technological progress, the report said. Loyal readers of The Federal Eye regularly complain about the long lines and grumpy postal workers working at the neighborhood post office. But visits to the local post office are way down, if you believe a new watchdog report. There were 59 million fewer visits to post offices in 2010 than in 2009, and visits are down 21 percent over the last decade, according to a new Government Accountability Office report . (Ironically — despite searching high and low for a number — the report doesn’t actually say how many visits were recorded in 2010.) Read full article > >

People who invest in hybrid cars are significantly less likely to be injured in an accident because their heavy batteries make the vehicles safer than traditional cars, according to an insurance industry report released Thursday. The average hybrid is 10 percent heavier than a traditional car of the same size, and the extra heft reduces the odds of being hurt in a crash by 25 percent, the report says. Read full article > >

The Internal Revenue Service was prepared for and adequately responded to the February 2010 plane crash at its Austin offices that killed one worker, according to a new watchdog report. Among other things, the report by the Treasury inspector general for tax administration (TIGTA) said the IRS properly protected its workers, secured taxpayer data after the crash and quickly resumed business operations at the site. Nearly one in three low-income young adults without a four-year college degree in the District was unemployed and not in school in 2009, far higher than the national rate, according to a report released Wednesday by the Brookings Institution . Using census data, the report examined 28,000 low-income 16-to-24-year-olds in Washington who had not earned a bachelor’s degree. Of those, nearly 9,000 were unemployed and not in school. Fed up with government waste and abuse? Eager for an example of taxpayer dollars being put to good use? We may have found one. The federal government’s five dozen inspectors general — tasked with rooting out government mismanagement everywhere from the Pentagon to the Postal Service — collectively identified $43.3 billion in potential savings in fiscal 2009, according to a report published last week by the Government Accountability Office. Given their 2009 budget authority of $2.3 billion, taxpayers would earn an $18 return on every dollar invested in inspectors general if the potential savings were fully enacted, the report said. Education writers rarely examine high school sports, but something is happening there that might help pull our schools out of the doldrums. In the last school year, a new national survey found that 7.7 million boys and girls took part in high school sports. This is 55.5 percent of all students, according to the report from the National Federation of State High School Associations, and the 22nd straight year that participation had increased. Unredacted cables listing the names of confidential assets, sources and informants from WikiLeaks have reportedly been circulating around the Web for months after being accidentally released by the group, Der Spiegel reported Monday . According to the report, the breach is a result of a personal conflict between WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and his former trusted lieutenant, Daniel Domscheit-Berg. The two men parted ways in September 2010, and Domscheit-Berg reportedly left with Assange’s access to various files, including the encrypted, unredacted file containing more than 250,000 original cables. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie ’s office is shooting down a report that he is rethinking his decision not to join the GOP presidential race in 2012. Bloomberg columnist Jonathan Alter tweeted early Wednesday afternoon that Christie had been “conducting focus groups in preparation for a possible run for president in 2012.” Christie spokeswoman Maria Comella issued a flat denial, telling The Fix that the report is “absolutely not true.” Read full article > >

WASHINGTON — There is a shortage of in-depth local journalism needed to hold government agencies, schools and businesses accountable, the federal agency that regulates television broadcasters concludes in a new report. The dearth of reporting comes despite an abundance of news outlets in today’s multimedia landscape, the report says. The report being released Thursday by the Federal Communications Commission is the product of an 18-month effort to explore the turmoil sweeping the traditional media business in the U.S. — particularly daily newspapers.
