Federal Communications Commission report finds serious shortage in local reporting

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

WASHINGTON — There is a shortage of in-depth local journalism needed to hold government agencies, schools and businesses accountable, the federal agency that regulates television broadcasters concludes in a new report. The dearth of reporting comes despite an abundance of news outlets in today’s multimedia landscape, the report says. The report being released Thursday by the Federal Communications Commission is the product of an 18-month effort to explore the turmoil sweeping the traditional media business in the U.S. — particularly daily newspapers. Safety panel: Toyota should listen more to customers

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Toyota management gave too little weight to feedback from customers, regulators and independent rating agencies, and centered too much control in its Japanese headquarters, according to the report of a special review panel convened after complaints of unintended acceleration forced the automaker to recall millions of cars . The panel, chaired by former U.S. Transportation secretary Rodney Slater, reported that the company apparently did not apply some of its principles of continuous improvement “as quickly and thoroughly as it could have in investigating and seeking out the root causes of customer complaints” about problems such as unintended acceleration. UN experts say North Korea is exporting ballistic missiles to Mideast and South Asia countries

Monday, May 16th, 2011

UNITED NATIONS — North Korea remains “actively engaged” in exporting ballistic missiles, components and technology to numerous customers in the Middle East and South Asia in violation of United Nations sanctions, a U.N. panel said in a new report. The seven-member panel said in a report to the U.N. Security Council obtained Monday by The Associated Press that North Korea has also completed — or is about to complete — construction of a second launch site for long-range rockets. The launch site on the country’s west coast is close to Tongchangdong and could be used for ballistic missiles in violation of U.N. sanctions, the report said. It said the installations appear “bigger and more sophisticated” than the original site on the east coast used for the 1998, 2006 and 2009 Taepodong missile launches. Read full article > >

BEIRUT — The Syrian army began a gradual withdrawal Thursday from a southern city at the heart of the uprising against the country’s authoritarian regime, 11 days after President Bashar Assad unleashed tanks and snipers to crush dissent there. Independent, UN panel confirms Haiti cholera outbreak caused by South Asian strain

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

UNITED NATIONS — The cholera outbreak that has killed nearly 5,000 people in Haiti was caused by a South Asian strain that contaminated a river where tens of thousands of people wash, bath, drink and play, a U.N. independent panel of experts said Wednesday. Although many have blamed the epidemic on U.N. peacekeepers from South Asia working in Haiti, the report issued by the panel declined to point the finger at any single group for the outbreak, saying it was the result of a “confluence of circumstances.” Read full article > >
