After GOP debate, feeling nostalgic for George W. Bush

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Perhaps I should thank the current crop of Republican presidential candidates for providing me with an experience I never, ever expected: During this week’s debate in New Hampshire , I had a moment of nostalgia for George W. Bush. Let me note that this was tempered by another response to Bush that I’ll get to. Yet compared with the New Hampshire Seven — and with today’s Republican majority in the House of Representatives — Bush was the reincarnation of Theodore Roosevelt. The 2012 GOP presidential field on display Monday offered not one idea about how to solve the problems facing our country that didn’t boil down to cutting taxes, slashing regulation or eliminating large swaths of government. Al-Jazeera Responds: A Rebuttal by Senior Presenter Teymoor Nabili

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

In this rebuttal to Aslan Media Columnist, Kianpars’ article on the Al Jazeera coverage of Bahrain , Al Jazeera’s own Teymoor Nabili offers his response. Recycling old memes is a venerable old tradition in journalism, almost part of the fabric of the profession, in fact; so addressing every instance of its practice is a herculean task these days, and best avoided. Nonetheless, when a particularly egregious piece of auto-pilot commentary begins to make the rounds, a response is called for. ” Al Jazeera in the Crosshairs “, published on this site recently, was just such a piece.

One-way ticket to Mars

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

How would you like to take a trip to Mars? That’s right, only to Mars. There would be no coming back. You don’t have to make up your mind right now, because there are no missions planned or even on the horizon. But when the idea of a one-way ticket to Mars was first broached last year in a cosmology journal, the response was rather overwhelming: More than 1,000 people said they’d be eager to go. It was not proposed as a suicide mission, although the chances of a long life on Mars probably aren’t great. Rather, it was pitched as what would potentially be the greatest scientific adventure and exploration of all time. Read full article > >

Former Alexandria police chief, who retired after DUI arrest, weighs run for city council

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

There was a time — after he had been arrested for drunken driving, left his job as Alexandria’s police chief and spent five days in jail — when a return to public life was the last thing on David P. Baker’s mind. Some days, he says, he was so ashamed he didn’t want to leave his house. But Baker says he has been inspired by the response he has received from people who have heard him tell his story in and around Alexandria — so much so, that he’s contemplating a run for City Council. “The easier thing to do is hide somewhere for a couple of years,” said Baker, 60. “The better way out is to face the circumstances head-on and be prepared to do the right thing, not be afraid to share my lessons with others.” Read full article > >

Should he tell family about his premonition of death?

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Your motivation may be a fantasy, but your response to it is a detailed, thought-out, financially accounted-for plan. Because of that — and because the 57th-birthday bombshell brings more drama, when less is best — I believe you should tell your wife (i.e., not your whole family gathered ’round) about those plans as soon as possible. You may be preoccupied by your vision, but no one else needs to be — especially since, under the purple smoke and incense, what you have is a natural impulse that just about anyone over, I dunno, 12 can relate to. Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

BEIRUT — A decade ago, the Middle East might have responded to the killing of Osama bin Laden with fury at the United States. But with the region convulsed by mostly peaceful popular revolutions, the response to his death has been muted, another signal that the old Arab order is being swept away.
