The DSK Case is Still Mysterious

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

Dominique Strauss-Kahn's acquittal and return to Paris haven't kept him off the front pages of the French tabloids or out of the capital's gossip. Journalist Edward Jay Epstein is sure to get the fire burning again with one of his signature minute-by-minute breakdowns of the encounter that caused an international scandal. In the New York Review of Books , Epstein argues that many mysteries still remain: “Was there anyone in room 2820 besides Diallo during and after the encounter with DSK? … And where, if it still exists, is the BlackBerry that DSK lost and feared was hacked?”

Book review: Patrick deWitt’s ‘The Sisters Brothers’

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

A few months ago, in a review of Susan Froderberg’s “ Old Border Road ,” I lamented that the once mighty western had faded away from American consciousness. The brilliance of that cultural insight was somewhat undercut by the fact that my review ran in The Post beneath a huge story about a movie called “ True Grit .” Maybe you’ve heard of it. . . . But fate wasn’t done with me yet. Two weeks ago, I jumped on my horse and rode off in all directions to sing the praises of Mary Dorset Russell’s “ Doc ,” a fantastic novel about Doc Holiday and Wyatt Earp. And already I’m back, shooting my mouth off about Patrick deWitt’s tale of two hired guns during the Gold Rush. Read full article > >

This is a linguistic hoot: Demetri Martin’s ‘This Is a Book’

Friday, May 20th, 2011

This is a Book Review. More precisely, this is a Book Review of “This Is a Book,” a work so wryly titled because comedian Demetri Martin mines the very nomenclature of things for askew humor, joyfully toying with the meanings and associations and sounds of words themselves. That is why he likes “boob.” This is a Defining Style. Martin will flash a few anatomical hahas — one must oblige one’s core Comedy Central demographic — but he likes “boob” mainly as a fast-punchline palindrome. Besides two-way spellings, he also trains his relentlessly inventive brain on acronyms and epigrams, graphs and rules of grammar, charts and doodle art. Language is his plaything — fodder to be prodded and poked and twisted till it yields bent-perspective laughs. Read full article > >
