Will 2009 bring a championship title to the San Diego Chargers?
Wednesday, May 6th, 2009
The San Diego Chargers have always been a team that sticks together and fights for what they want. Because of this drive, their fan base is loyal and dedicated to cheering them on to a Championship title. With several months left before the season opener, tickets are already in high demand, and will disappear like never before.
The team had a phenomenal year last year, and were able to determine what their weaknesses are. From this, they decided to focus only on strengthen these weak points and nothing else. Management has chosen to look at the draft – only – for new players. There is a possibility, if absolutely necessary, that a trade or free agent may have a chance, but not as far as anyone knows right now. Fans are excited and know that, at this point, just about anything can happen.
In the late 50s a man by the name of Barron Hilton – Conrad Hilton’s son – was the owner of the San Diego Chargers. Managing a football team, during this time, while still stressful, was much less complicated than it is today. Events like the draft were not covered with near as much red tape, as they are today, and decisions could be made much more quickly; giving fans the answers they were looking for much faster than today.
Their first year, on the field, actually took place in Los Angeles in 1960. It was not until the following year – 1961 – that the Chargers were in their home of San Diego. Sid Gillman coached players like Lance Alworth, John Hadl, and Paul Lowe to greatness. Alworth, in fact, is part of the Hall of Fame. Even though the fans were not climbing out of the woodworks, the team was beginning to get a solid following.
A few short years later, the San Diego Chargers were sold to another franchise and they began to play against NFL teams like the New York Jets; whom they proudly beat! This was an astonishing feat for the team as the Jets were Super Bowl Champions in ‘69. The Chargers coach fell ill and had to hand his position over Charlie Waller, the team’s offensive backfield coach. The 60s proved to be a time of change for the team, and this is when they began to make their climb to fame.
The San Diego Chargers have been through many ups and downs, but none of it has stopped them from fighting for the championship title! In 2008, they held a record of 7-wins and 8-losses. This record proved the team was close, and fans began to be overwhelmed with the anticipation of a title win.
At the end of the season, they faced off with the Denver Broncos, whom they beat with a final score of 52-21. This win brought an AFC Western Division title to their locker room, and to their loyal fans. It also brought them to the playoffs as 4th seed. The 2008 season proved to be a good year for the Chargers, and opened the door to a phenomenal 2009 season.
As the 2009 season approaches, fans anxiously await the outcome of the draft. Everyone knows that management is focused – 100% – on strengthening the team’s weaknesses, making them unbreakable. Season tickets will be a sellout this year, as fans anticipate a championship win!
