They can hide in their gated Malibu compounds and behind the VIP-room velvet ropes. They can armor up with steely publicists and bluff the world with crafty faux-mances. They can decree that certain questions are off-limits when they deign to talk for 20 minutes with hand-picked reporters in the neutral territory of a Four Seasons suite. Read full article > >

Let’s say there’s a boy named Johnny who attends basketball games at his neighborhood high school. His older brother goes there, as did his big sister. He attends the school’s summer basketball camp and is counting the seasons until he can try out for the team. For years, his mom has left work early to run the concession stand at the gym on game nights. Read full article > >

SUNRISE, Fla. — The Washington Capitals have won the Southeast Division each of the past four seasons. But their reign will be tested this winter by Florida — a point the revamped Panthers hammered home Monday. Stephen Weiss registered two goals and an assist, and the Panthers struck three times on six power-play opportunities to hold off the Capitals, 5-4 , at BankAtlantic Center. Read full article > >

Heather E. Henderson sat down for lunch one recent afternoon at Bourbon Steak, the Georgetown Four Seasons restaurant where she’s a regular. She ordered raw oysters, Singapore noodles and one of the head bartender’s house-made apple sodas. Then, she engaged her lunch companion: the iPhone that has commanded — or at least divided — Henderson’s attention on countless eating excursions. Read full article > >

Like his countrymen Ricky Gervais and Simon Pegg, filmmaker Richard Ayoade comes to the big screen after success in British sitcoms: For four seasons, he has played uber-nerd Maurice Moss on the award-winning “The IT Crowd,” a comedy about tech-support misfits that has made him a household name in England and among American followers of the Britcom scene. In Ayoade’s case, though, his feature breakthrough — the coming-of-age film “Submarine,” which opens Friday — is being made behind the camera, as writer/director. Speaking over lunch in a fashionable Manhattan hotel, the soft-spoken actor gently mocks the notion that he “had the option” to star in Hollywood comedies the way Pegg and Gervais have done. Those two “are so liked as performers that there are enormous demands for them to be in other things,” he says. This is not, he adds, “really something that I have to negotiate, personally.” Read full article > >

Four tips on where to eat, sleep and get pampered in North America’s largest mountain resort Recently spending a week at Whistler Blackcomb (my annual snowboarding destination), I stuck to some of my favorite gear and places but also used the trip as an opportunity to try some new things. This first story, in a series of three, focuses on highlights of Whistler itself. Stay tuned for a gear round-up and apparel review both later this week. Four Seasons While a little off the beaten path, the Four Seasons makes up for it with spacious rooms that all come equipped with cozy fireplaces, thick terry robes and toasty down comforters. Impeccable food throughout its two restaurants and full bar service at the hot tub lends easy indulgence to a stay there. Being out of the fray of the main village provides a peaceful atmosphere, and a constantly rotating shuttle bus and Mercedes MLS courtesy car provide easy access to everything—nearly on demand. Scandinave New to Whistler this year, the Scandinave Spa is exactly what the resort town has been missing. The 3 acre property has multiple baths of varied temperatures, a large steam room and huge pine sauna. All of these features are outside and set in to a beautiful, rustic slope, complimented by modern Nordic-style buildings that house a caf
