Steve Jobs originally wanted Apple to be able to operate the iPhone without help from carriers. That’s what John Stanton, a venture capitalist and wireless industry veteran, told his audience at a Seattle speech Monday, IDG News reported . According to Stanton, when Jobs was first percolating ideas about the handset from 2005-2007, he discussed the plausibility of going around carriers and using the unlicensed spectrum that WiFi networks rely on for the phones. JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. — A U.S. Army soldier accused of exhorting his bored underlings to slaughter three civilians for sport was convicted of murder, conspiracy and other charges Thursday in one of the most gruesome cases to emerge from the Afghan war. Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs, of Billings, Mont., was the highest ranking of five soldiers charged in the deaths of the unarmed men during patrols in Kandahar province early last year. At his seven-day court martial at Joint Base Lewis-McChord south of Seattle, the 26-year-old acknowledged cutting fingers off corpses and yanking out a victim’s tooth to keep as war trophies, “like keeping the antlers off a deer you’d shoot.” Read full article > >

SEATTLE — Amanda Knox returned to her hometown of Seattle on Tuesday and was as overcome with emotion as she was a day earlier in Italy, when she was acquitted on murder charges after four years in prison. “Thank you for being there for me,” she tearfully told her supporters in front of a crowd of reporters from two continents. LONDON — After Italian prisoners gave her a boisterous goodbye, Amanda Knox made her way home to America on Tuesday, holing up with family on the upper deck of a jetliner to Seattle as she enjoyed her first full day of freedom since her murder conviction was reversed. Reporters on board the British Airways flight hoping to talk to Knox, now a tabloid staple on two continents, were blocked on the stairs by a flight attendant who politely informed them that the family would speak publicly only after the plane touched down at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. It was unclear whether Knox herself would speak then. Read full article > >

PERUGIA, Italy — Meredith Kercher would have been 25. The British student would have finished her degree at Leeds University and perhaps been preparing for another Halloween, a day she loved. Instead, her family awaits an appeals verdict expected Monday against former roommate Amanda Knox, of Seattle, who was convicted along with her Italian ex-boyfriend of murdering Kercher in 2007. LAS VEGAS — When the NBA last locked out its players in 1998, Rashard Lewis was a teenager living in his mother’s house. He didn’t know what it meant to miss NBA checks because the Seattle SuperSonics had yet to pay him after selecting him in the second round. But Lewis has much more to lose during this lockout, with a salary that would make him the second-highest paid player in the league next season at $22 million. Read full article > >

Stop me if you’ve heard this one: A vegetarian walks into a bar. No, make that a fast-food chain, where the veg-head ends up unwittingly getting something non-vegetarian — because the menu doesn’t warn otherwise, and neither do any of the servers. You may have heard it before, in slightly different versions, because it’s pretty much what went down at Chipotle Mexican Grill last month, when a Maxim editor took to Twitter to complain that he doesn’t eat pork — yet discovered that for a decade the pinto beans he’s been eating from the chain have been made with bacon . And it’s reminiscent of a decade ago, when McDonald’s settled a lawsuit over the undisclosed use of beef extract in its french fries . Read full article > >

Among the current roster of Washington Nationals , the players making this city aware that competent baseball is not some abstract, imagined thing, John Lannan has seen more losses than all but one. He arrived from the minors in 2007, and everyone from that team except franchise cornerstone Ryan Zimmerman has left. He has stayed, and mostly, he’s lost. Lannan, then, understood the significance of his latest stellar performance Wednesday night beyond its result, a 2-1 Nationals victory over the Seattle Mariners at Nationals Park. By winning 10 out of 11 games, the Nationals have surged to an even 37-37 for the season. Elsewhere, a .500 record would hardly warrant mention. But the last time the Nationals were .500 at this point in the season or later was Oct. 2, 2005, the final day of their inaugural season. Read full article > >

Oh, Anthony. Anthony Weiner — the appear-everywhere, put-your-dukes-up-partisan Democratic congressman from New York City — had a week to remember. And not in a good way. It began, as these scandals all seem to do these days, with Twitter. A picture of a man’s underwear-clad crotch (how’s that for a euphemism) was sent via Weiner’s Twitter account to a college student in Seattle last Friday night. Read full article > >

Comcast has absorbed a lot of criticism since its decision last week to hire Meredith Attwell Baker, a sitting member of the Federal Communications Commission. But one critical remark really got under the company’s skin. When an employee of Reel Grrls, a nonprofit educational program in Seattle, sent a tweet questioning Baker’s hiring after the commissioner voted to approve Comcast’s mega-venture with NBC Universal, Comcast’s reaction was swift and harsh .
