Naif Al-Mutawa fights to bring ‘THE 99’ and its message to wide U.S. audience

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Naif Al-Mutawa , a psychologist from Kuwait, was riding in a London taxi not long after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks when he had an idea. To counter the terrorists’ message, he wanted to create a children’s television series about superheroes who embody the values, culture and history of Islam and the Middle East. At Jiffy Lube Live show, Toby Keith sticks with his boot-kicking brand of patriotism

He’s Toby Keith, and he’s reporting for duty. Appearing at Jiffy Lube Live on Saturday night, the onetime controversy-stoking country star marked the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks with a confident shrug. “We always gotta be vigilant,” Keith said. But come what may, “the military is always gonna take care of us.” Read full article > >

AP sources: No sign of al-Qaida entry to US for 9/11 anniversary attack but US remains alert

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

WASHINGTON — U.S. intelligence agencies have found no evidence that al-Qaida has sneaked any terrorists into the country for a strike coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, senior officials said Saturday. In Peru, hard-won democratic gains at risk

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

At a meeting of Western Hemisphere leaders in Lima, Peru, just moments after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Secretary of State Colin Powell signed the Inter-American Democratic Charter. The Andean nation had recently emerged from a decade of authoritarian rule under Alberto Fujimori. This was the right time and place for governments to endorse democratic principles. Today, however, many Peruvian supporters of democracy are dispirited. When they mark the charter’s 10th year, their country will have a president of suspect democratic credentials. Peru’s already fragile institutions will be severely tested. Read full article > >

Obama seeks extension for Robert Mueller as FBI director

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

President Obama announced Thursday that he is seeking a two-year extension of Robert S. Mueller III’s term as FBI director, saying he cannot afford to lose the longtime FBI chief at a time of terrorist threats. The request for Congress to extend Mueller’s 10-year term comes as the White House had been searching for a candidate to succeed him. Mueller, 66, is facing mandatory retirement in September after a decade in which he oversaw the crackdown on terrorism following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, along with the bureau’s ongoing transformation into an intelligence-driven agency. Rashard Mendenhall’s mistake teaches athletes to type at their own risk

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

Nothing matters less to me than the views of Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall. No time should be wasted contemplating most of Mendenhall’s ill-advised comments Monday on Twitter questioning Osama bin Laden’s guilt in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, whether two of the four jets hijacked that day actually brought down the World Trade Center and the U.S. government’s portrayal of the self-avowed terrorist. As for Mendenhall taking exception with people celebrating bin Laden’s death Sunday, I won’t lose any sleep over that, either. Read full article > >
