Chinese officials are investigating an explosion last weekend at another factory in China that makes components for Apple products. Apple supplier Pegatron Corp. said in a statement that the explosion at the Shanghai factory occurred in dust collection equipment, the Associated Press reported Tuesday. The wire service said local media reported that 61 people were hurt and more than 20 hospitalized but that none had life-threatening injuries. Read full article > >

SHANGHAI — A staff member slashed children with a knife at a daycare center for migrant workers in eastern China on Monday, wounding eight children, one seriously. The attack took place at noon at an informal daycare center in Shanghai’s suburban Minhang district, home to many migrant workers. The female attacker was taken into custody and police were investigating, said Zhuang Liqiang, an officer in the information services department of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau. In some strange ways, it is as if he had a premonition. Last week, the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei unexpectedly announced that he was going to build his new studio in Berlin. (His Shanghai studio was razed without warning by Chinese authorities in January.) He told reporters that he had chosen Berlin because of its artistic community and the relatively cheap cost of building. He would have to oversee the project, but the artist and government critic wanted to spend “as little time as possible” in Germany, adding, “however, there will be no choice if my work and life are somehow threatened.”
