FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A babysitter and trusted neighbor has confessed that he bludgeoned a 9-year-old Indiana girl to death with a brick then dismembered her, hiding her head, hands and feet at his home and dumping the rest of her remains nearby, police said Tuesday. Allen County sheriff’s investigators said in an affidavit that 39-year-old Michael Plumadore admits he killed Aliahna Lemmon on Thursday. Read full article > >

The Justice Department on Thursday accused a controversial Arizona sheriff known for tough immigration enforcement of widespread discrimination against Hispanics, saying Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s department illegally detained Hispanic residents and denied them critical services in jail. Arpaio, the longtime sheriff in Maricopa County, oversaw a pattern of unconstitutional conduct that targeted Hispanics and retaliated against others who criticized the practices, the department said in an investigative report. PHOENIX — A small plane with six people aboard, including three children, crashed in flames in mile-high mountains on Phoenix’s eastern outskirts, leaving one child confirmed dead and no signs of any survivors, authorities said. Preliminary reports indicate the two-engine aircraft flew from Safford to Mesa’s Falcon Field to pick up three children for the Thanksgiving holiday and was headed back to Safford in southeastern Arizona, Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said. Spotsylvania man inadvertently shoots self in Giant parking lot

A Spotsylvania County man inadvertently shot and killed himself Sunday in the parking lot of a Giant food store where he and his family had gone to return a movie, authorities said. The 45-year-old man apparently reached down to buckle or remove his seatbelt and inadvertently pulled the trigger on a Glock 40-caliber handgun he was carrying, said Capt. Girl, 8, reports attempted abduction in Spotsylvania

An 8-year-old girl reported that a man tried to get her into a car this weekend, continuing the rash of reported attempted abductions in Spotsylvania County, authorities said. According to an alert issued by the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s County, the girl said that she was approached by a Hispanic man at approximately 4:20 p.m. Saturday afternoon in Satterfield Court in Fredericksburg.
