Alexandria coal plant to close within a year

The last major stumbling block to closing the Alexandria coal-burning power plant was removed Friday after a regional power organization determined that its operation is not needed to keep the area’s electrical grid reliable. The 62-year-old Potomac River generating plant, once considered the single biggest source of air pollution in the region, is now set to close no later than Oct. 1, 2012, a spokeswoman for owner GenOn confirmed. KABUL, Afghanistan — Sixty-six U.S. troops have died in Afghanistan so far this month, making August the deadliest month for American forces in the nearly decade-long war. Nearly half of the troops killed died on Aug. 6 when the Taliban shot down a Chinook helicopter in eastern Afghanistan. That was the single deadliest event of the war and sent the monthly total soaring, according to a tally by The Associated Press. The 30 American service members — most of them elite Navy SEALs — were aboard the helicopter as it flew in to help Army Rangers who had come under fire. Most of the SEALs who died were from the same unit that killed bin Laden, although none of the men took part in that mission. Read full article > >

Researchers see a pattern in rise of deadly tornadoes

The extraordinary Joplin twister — the single deadliest tornado since officials began keeping records in 1950 — was a rare destructive phenomenon known as a “ multi-vortex ,” hiding two or more cyclones within the wider wind funnel. Sunday’s storm smashed the southwest Missouri city’s hospital, left nothing but splintered trees where neighborhoods once stood, and killed at least 116, with the death toll expected to rise.
