STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Joe Paterno fractured his pelvis again following a fall at his home but will not need surgery, a person close to the family told The Associated Press on Sunday. The former Penn State football coach was expected to make a full recovery after slipping Saturday and was admitted to the hospital the next day, the person added. DAMASCUS, Syria — U.S. Ambassador Robert Ford has been pulled out of Syria because of concerns for his safety, embassy officials said Monday, citing “credible threats” to the security of the envoy who has led American criticism of Syrian efforts to crush a seven-month-old uprising. Ford, whose high-profile visits to activists and protests had made him a controversial figure in Syria, returned to the United States at the weekend and will remain there indefinitely until “the situation improves on the ground,” said Haynes Mahoney, the charge d’affaires at the embassy in Damascus. TRIPOLI, Libya — The U.S. ambassador to Libya raised the American flag over a newly reopened embassy Thursday, a month after Moammar Gaddafi fled the capital and seven months after the embassy staff was forced out. “I never thought I’d come back, and I’m overjoyed,” ambassador Gene Cretz said as he stood under a date palm in the garden of his former residence, which will serve as the embassy until a permanent location is found.
