Laughing may help ease blood pressure, boost mood and enrich health in other ways

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Whenever I took a tumble or scraped my knee as a child, my mother typically assessed the situation and then promptly tickled me, counseling, “Laughter is the best medicine.” This trick remains remarkably effective with my own boys and, to this day, YouTube videos of laughing babies or cats playing with printers still have the power to make me feel a bit better when I’m under the weather. U.S. pulls ambassador out of Syria, citing threats

Monday, October 24th, 2011

DAMASCUS, Syria — U.S. Ambassador Robert Ford has been pulled out of Syria because of concerns for his safety, embassy officials said Monday, citing “credible threats” to the security of the envoy who has led American criticism of Syrian efforts to crush a seven-month-old uprising. Ford, whose high-profile visits to activists and protests had made him a controversial figure in Syria, returned to the United States at the weekend and will remain there indefinitely until “the situation improves on the ground,” said Haynes Mahoney, the charge d’affaires at the embassy in Damascus. U.S. Embassy in Libya reopens

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

TRIPOLI, Libya — The U.S. ambassador to Libya raised the American flag over a newly reopened embassy Thursday, a month after Moammar Gaddafi fled the capital and seven months after the embassy staff was forced out. “I never thought I’d come back, and I’m overjoyed,” ambassador Gene Cretz said as he stood under a date palm in the garden of his former residence, which will serve as the embassy until a permanent location is found. The old embassy was destroyed by pro-Gaddafi forces in May as distraught embassy staff monitored the situation from a temporary office in Washington. Read full article > >

Point Chaud: A crepe lunch spot

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

One wouldn’t normally describe a menu of 74 items as simple, but when those items are all slight variations on the same dish, a case can be made. Such is the situation at Point Chaud Cafe & Crepes, a creperie with two 14th street locations that opened last year. Both spaces host a healthy lunchtime buzz (which can be a bit more of a roar at the downtown location) and excel at providing a quick and affordable sit-down lunch without making guests feel rushed. On the menu: Point Chaud’s comprehensive, if unsurprising, menu of classic crepes offers 51 sweet varieties and 23 savory selections. Don’t let the numbers daunt you; most are variations on a few themes. Nutella with strawberry and banana, Nutella with strawberry and raspberry, and Nutella with strawberry and blackberry are three menu items. Savory options include many variations on an egg-and-cheese theme but also such choices as roasted eggplant, sauteed and grilled chicken, and tuna and spinach with feta and black olives. OnLove: Randall Craft weds Chris Layfield

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Randall Craft first noticed Chris Layfield in the fall of 1994, when they began their freshman year at Georgetown University. Though the two lived in the same dorm and had a few mutual friends, they rarely spoke. Craft watched as Layfield danced to Madonna in the campus coffee shop and promoted the gay student group around campus. Meanwhile, Craft was hiding out in a dirty baseball hat, trying to date girls, and, he says, “making their lives unhappy.” But no one was more miserable about the situation than he was. So after graduating in 1998, Craft came out of the closet. Read full article > >
