Before I started experimenting with indoor smoking, I had a question: Was smoking foods indoors basically the same as smoking it outdoors, except with a ceiling instead of a sky? By “same,” I didn’t mean the method. Indoor smoking is a miniature version of the real thing — well, sort of. I mean the flavor. Is the taste of oven-smoked meats as robust as those smoked outside? If not, is it close enough to make it worth the bother? Read full article > >

If your home is your castle, you should be able to do anything legal you want in it, including lighting up a cigarette, right? Some residents in the Washington area are challenging that notion, arguing that secondhand smoke seeps through the walls and affects their health. In some recent cases, residents have taken steps to prevent their neighbors from smoking in their own units, following the lead of other condo associations and groups of residents across the country. A California Democrat wants to ban smoking in and outside all federal buildings across the country, reigniting a years-long attempt to ban smokers from lighting up on, near and in sight of federal property. The bill, introduced late Friday by Rep. Susan Davis (D-Calif.), would ban smoking in and 25 feet around all properties owned or leased by the federal government. Smoking areas — located inside or just outside some federal properties — also would be shuttered. Read full article > >

Herman Cain does not endorse smoking, despite his campaign’s decision to prominently feature an aide smoking a cigarette in a recent Web video , the businessman and GOP presidential candidate said Sunday. During an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” host Bob Schieffer — who survived a bout with bladder cancer that he attributes to smoking — said the ad “sends a signal that it’s cool to smoke,” a charge Cain denied. Say what you will about it — and people are saying plenty — it’s a dead certainty you’ve never seen a campaign video quite like this one. Here’s a gray-haired gentleman, his bespectacled eyes a pair of dark raccoon circles, extolling Republican Herman Cain in rather a conventional way (“We’ve run a campaign like nobody has ever seen,” he says). And then the guy, Cain’s chief of staff, Mark Block, does something unexpected and kind of shocking: He stares into the camera and draws a cigarette to his lips, blowing a bit of smoke at the viewer.
