Herman Cain does not endorse smoking, despite his campaign’s decision to prominently feature an aide smoking a cigarette in a recent Web video , the businessman and GOP presidential candidate said Sunday. During an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” host Bob Schieffer — who survived a bout with bladder cancer that he attributes to smoking — said the ad “sends a signal that it’s cool to smoke,” a charge Cain denied. Say what you will about it — and people are saying plenty — it’s a dead certainty you’ve never seen a campaign video quite like this one. Here’s a gray-haired gentleman, his bespectacled eyes a pair of dark raccoon circles, extolling Republican Herman Cain in rather a conventional way (“We’ve run a campaign like nobody has ever seen,” he says). And then the guy, Cain’s chief of staff, Mark Block, does something unexpected and kind of shocking: He stares into the camera and draws a cigarette to his lips, blowing a bit of smoke at the viewer. LEIDSCHENDAM, Netherlands — Prosecutors analyzed a vast network of telephone records to link four Hezbollah members to the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, but there is no clear smoking gun in the case, according to an indictment unsealed Wednesday. The special court investigating Hariri’s murder unsealed the 47-page indictment against four members of the Iranian-backed Shiite militia Hezbollah for alleged involvement in the deadly truck bombing that killed Hariri. “ The Hangover Part II ” may have been characterized by most critics as a swap-Tyson’s-tiger-for-a-smoking-monkey rehash. But that didn’t stop summer moviegoers from buying tickets. For reasons that defy logic, economics and social fashion, the little red brick house and its denizens endure here, on one of Washington’s least lovely downtown office blocks, like a bloom in a crack of the concrete canyon where I Street merges with Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The green wood door is topped with an antique fan of leaded glass and adorned with a brass knocker worn smooth from use. Knock, and be admitted. A throng of maybe 100 is sipping wine and nibbling chicken liver pate and skewered sea scallops. Most are dressed in black tie or evening gowns. Some of the dinner jackets are adorned with medals, indicating that the wearer is a military man. Many are spiced with colorful vests or adventurous cummerbunds, suggesting a free spirit. One of the freest spirits is art professor Edward “Eddie” Purcell III, who has cast aside all thought of a tux in favor of a full-length red silk 1950s vintage Chinese smoking robe.
