Facebook IPO: Questions about disclosure swirl as stock stabilizes

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012

Facebook shares hovered around $32 Wednesday morning, its fourth day of trading, as several banks involved in the company’s initial public offering have come under scrutiny. Reuters reported Tuesday that the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth has issued a subpoena to Morgan Stanley, the lead underwriter for the social network’s market debut. The subpoena comes after it was reported that analysts working for Morgan Stanley — as well as analysts at JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs — had all cut their revenue estimates for Facebook after seeing the company’s revised S-1 filing on May 9. In that document, Facebook expressed concern about its ability to respond to consumers’ shift to mobile devices. Read full article > >

Pianist Jeremy Denk, a classicist for the 21st century, at Sixth and I Synagogue

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

There’s a whole dance of vulnerability and restraint that goes on when a concert performer walks out in front of an audience: the formal attire and hush of the hall on the one hand, the emotional revelations of performance on the other. Audiences are generally hungry for as much of the revelation part as they can get and are thus eager to look behind the scenes; today, blogs, Twitter and other social media are helping lift the curtain more and more, and making such access a part of the performer’s job. The $104 billion question: What does Facebook’s value say about ours?

Friday, May 18th, 2012

In the late 1990s, the craze for initial public offerings was hailed as the dawn of a new age. The Internet was replacing manufacturing. Who needed a factory floor when you could point and click? Facebook’s Friday IPO, which opened with a staggering $104 billion valuation for the company, hasn’t transported us back to the bubble years of the 1990s. But, like that time, today’s Facebook frenzy is about what our society values. When Mark Zuckerberg rang the opening bell on Friday, his company’s $38 share price wasn’t rooted solely in the economics of the social networking giant. What the financial analysts are selling isn’t just the initial public offering of a company that Zuckerberg started in his dorm room at Harvard eight years ago. They are selling an image of the United States. Read full article > >

The deal with yoga in Washington is getting kind of complicated. If it’s a bargain you’re after, that’s not hard to find, especially with DC Yoga Week starting Sunday. Now in its seventh year, the event is eight days of free and $5 classes at 24 studios across the area. (This year, Maryland and Virginia studios are taking part, too.) And any other week, there’s a good chance folks can snag a Groupon or Living Social deal or similar discount on their downward-facing dogs.  Read full article > >

Social Security benefits available online

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

The Social Security Administration is now providing workers with online statements of the estimated benefits they will get when they retire, replacing the paper ones the agency used to mail out. Until last year, the agency mailed yearly statements that showed the benefits a worker would collect if he or she retired at age 62, age 66 or age 70. It stopped the mailings to save an estimated $70 million a year. Read full article > >
