Zero Hedge says it is: And it does look terrifying. Spain’s youth unemployment rate is 51.4 percent! Greece’s is nearly there. Isn’t that the sort of that leads to war and destruction? Perhaps, though there’s a key caveat missing here: Spain’s youth unemployment rate is only calculated among those youths actually looking for work. As the European Commission explains , the vast majority of kids that age are still in school. That means only about 17.8 percent of all Spanish youths aged 16-24 are jobless and not in school. (In Greece, it’s 10 percent of all youths; across the euro area as a whole, it’s 8.7 percent.) Those are still terrible numbers, albeit somewhat less apocalyptic. Read full article > >

MADRID — Spain will slide back into recession early next year with the current quarter and the first of 2012 both registering negative growth, new Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said Monday. De Guindos said he expects the economy — the eurozone’s fourth largest — to contract by between 0.2 percent and 0.3 percent on the previous quarter in the final three months of this year and again in the first quarter of next year. LONDON — Euphoria over a move by the world’s major central banks to keep Europe’s debt crisis from choking off global lending was tempered Thursday amid renewed signs of the region’s slowing growth and reminders that European woes have no easy fix. Stock markets in Asia were broadly up on the coordinated move by central banks on Wednesday.
