Sunday, February 5th, 2012

Newt Gingrich’s campaign remains roughly $600,000 in debt, two months after it reported deep debts and a long list of creditors, newly released campaign spending records show. Fundraising by the former House speaker’s campaign has stepped up markedly since then and Gingrich just last month cut by half the $1.2 million owed in October 2010. Still, several outstanding creditors remain. Read full article > >

NBC objects to Mitt Romney’s ‘history lesson’ ad

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

A harsh new ad from former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney uses news footage from 1997 to remind voters of then-House speaker Newt Gingrich ’s ethics violations. “History Lesson” is unusual in that neither Romney nor Gingrich appears. The entire 30-second spot consists of an NBC News report from Jan. 21, 1997, the day Gingrich was reprimanded by Congress for using tax-exempt money for political purposes and giving the House Ethics Committee false information. Blasting Mozart to drive criminals away

Friday, January 20th, 2012

S ome months ago, I was sitting at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York with enough time on my hands that I actually noticed the music coming over the speakers in the ceiling. It was the scherzo from Schubert’s first piano trio. Schubert’s piano trios are among my favorite pieces in the universe, but as I listened, I found that I wasn’t relaxing; quite the contrary. The music sounded awful: tinny, hard-edged, aggressive. I wanted to get away. Read full article > >

What do voters know about the GOP field? Very little.

Friday, January 13th, 2012

A new Pew Research Center poll suggests that most voters have little idea about even the most basic facts regarding the backgrounds of the men seeking the Republican presidential nomination this year. Pew asked registered voters four questions: 1) “Which candidate served as the speaker of the House” 2) “Mitt Romney was the governor of ___” 3) “After Iowa and New Hampshire, the next primary is in ____” 4) “Which GOP candidate opposes U.S. involvement in Afghanistan” Read full article > >

CES 2012: Day 3 preview

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

The Consumer Electronics Show is winding down now, after two (well, three, if you include the media day) days of frenzied discussion over what’s next in the technology world. On Thursday, the keynote speaker of the day comes not from a hardware company, but from YouTube: Robert Kyncl, who heads up its Global Content Partnerships program. The theme of the keynote is in keeping with a theme we’ve been seeing throughout the show: the move toward a central platform for entertainment. Read full article > >

A few cracks in my crystal ball

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Pundits say the darndest things on television. Take, for example, the genius who said in January that “the president has a fairly easy” reelection ahead of him. Or the guy who said in June that Newt Gingrich was “finished, whether he knows he is or not.” How about the talking head who said in July that House Speaker John Boehner had suffered a “mortal wound” at the hands of fellow Republicans? Or the one who predicted in August that Rick Perry would “hold his own” in the presidential debates? Read full article > >

Newt Gingrich: Kibitzer-in-chief?

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

As Newt Gingrich will be the first to tell you, he is a man with a vast and deep résumé. One boast he has been offering lately makes the former House speaker and current presidential contender sound like a cross between Mr. Chips and Sun Tzu . “I am the longest-serving teacher in the senior military, 23 years teaching one- and two-star generals and admirals the art of war,” Gingrich said at the most recent GOP presidential debate in Iowa.
