A female Frostburg State University student died early Sunday morning after another female student stabbed her in the head during an argument that spilled out of an off-campus dwelling, police said. Police found Kortneigh McCoy, a 19-year-old sophomore from Baltimore, lying in the street near the small-town western Maryland campus sometime before 2 a.m. McCoy was bleeding from a head wound, according to a release from Allegany County investigators. Fish living in Gulf of Mexico marshes exposed to last year’s oil spill have undergone cellular changes that could lead to developmental and reproductive problems, a group of researchers reported Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study , which was funded by the National Science Foundation and the BP-funded Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, suggests scientists are just beginning to capture the spill’s ecological impact . The team of researchers from Louisiana State, Texas State and Clemson universities focused on the killifish, a minnowlike fish that is abundant and a good indicator of the health of wetlands. ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Shell Oil Co. on Monday took a step closer to tapping vast petroleum reserves off Alaska’s Arctic coasts when the federal Environmental Protection Agency approved an air quality permit for one of the company’s drilling vessels. The EPA approved the air permit for the drilling vessel Noble Discover, which Shell hopes to use for exploratory wells in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska’s northwest coast, and its support fleet of oil spill response and supply vessels.
