John Wall and Andray Blatche trapped Philadelphia 76ers guard Evan Turner in the corner at one point in the Washington Wizards ’ preseason opener Friday night, frantically waving their arms and bouncing around until Wall eventually corralled the ball. Wall took off on a full sprint, split two defenders, then spotted JaVale McGee out ahead. He tossed an underhand pass at an impossible angle that even the ultra-athletic McGee could not catch. McGee slapped at the ball and it hit off the backboard for a turnover. Read full article > >

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A Pakistani Taliban spokesman denied Sunday an earlier announcement by the militant group’s deputy chief that it was holding peace talks with the government. The conflicting claims are a clear sign of splits within the movement, which could make it harder for Islamabad to strike a deal to end the violent insurgency gripping the country. At the same time, the cracks could make it easier to suppress the insurgency militarily. Read full article > >

District native Lamont Peterson pulled off one of the more stunning upsets in recent boxing memory, winning a split decision over Amir Khan in their unified super lightweight title bout on Saturday night at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. So sure of his ability in the boxing ring, Khan traveled to the home town of his challenger expecting a tidy victory in defense of his titles. The bold move backfired, though, when to the delight of the partisan crowd of 8,647, Peterson clearly wasn’t willing to be just another glorified sparring partner in the first major championship fight in the nation’s capital since 1993 . The (re)rise of former House speaker Newt Gingrich in the 2012 Republican presidential race has re-started a debate over his at-times-tumultuous personal life and how much it could — or should — impact his chances of winning the nomination. The facts are these: Gingrich has been married three times. He and his first wife, Jackie, divorced in 1981. (The circumstances surrounding the split up — including a debate about whether Gingrich informed his wife of his plans during a time when she was hospitalized — remain a point of debate.) A contentious battle between Catholic groups and the Obama administration has flared in recent days, fueled by the new health-care law and ongoing divisions over access to abortion and birth control. The latest dispute centers on a decision by the Department of Health and Human Services in late September to end funding to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to help victims of human trafficking , or modern-day slavery. The church group had overseen nationwide services to victims since 2006 but was denied a new grant in favor of three other groups. Read full article > >

DEAR AMY: My freshman seminar professor recently assigned a labor-intensive reading assignment. I didn’t have time to do the entire thing, so a few of my classmates and I split up the assignment and then swapped notes (I still skimmed the other parts, trying not to feel like a slacker.) Is this practice morally sound if we’re only sharing notes and turning them in for grades? Read full article > >

Where were we? Oh, right, still running from zombies. Have you looked around lately at the cable news channels? The zombies are winning, my dears. AMC’s hit “ The Walking Dead ” returns Sunday night, and before we ask whether or not it’s gotten better as a series, I suppose some reference should be made to a bit of backstage tumult : Frank Darabont, who shepherded the original “Walking Dead” graphic novel series, is off the show, even though his influence will remain strong for the first half of this season’s episodes. (There will be six episodes this fall , with another six starting up again February.) Now the graphic novelist , Robert Kirkman, and the head writer, Glen Mazzara, are in charge. What happened there? Rookie Roy Helu is the least known of the three running backs who split time in the Washington Redskins ’ backfield. There’s apparently a reason for that. “He’s very different,” said New York Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara , one of Helu’s closest friends and a former college teammate at Nebraska. Helu has flash, but he’s not flashy. Read full article > >
