Pentagon’s Michele Flournoy to step down

Michele Flournoy, the Defense Department’s undersecretary for policy and one of the most senior women civilians ever to serve at the Pentagon, said Monday that she is stepping down early next year. Flournoy, 50, has a relatively low public profile but has been influential since the start of the Obama administration in shaping defense policy toward emerging threats and formulating counterinsurgency strategy in Afghanistan. WASHINGTON — Sheila Bair is stepping down as chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. this summer, ending a five-year term in which she helped craft the government’s response to the 2008 financial crisis. Bair will leave her post as one of the top banking regulators on July 8, the FDIC said Monday. She was among the first officials to raise concerns about the explosion of high-risk lending to borrowers with bad credit. Under her tenure, the agency closed the most banks since the savings and loan crisis. That included Washington Mutual, the nation’s largest bank failure. Read full article > >
