Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

PHILADELPHIA — The Washington Wizards had discussed progress frequently over the last week on the strength of a win against a Western Conference power and three losses by an average of six points. Then they arrived at Wells Fargo Center on a rainy Monday and regressed into the same disinterested outfit that dropped a franchise-worst eight in a row to begin the season. Read full article > >

Ron Paul worries everyone but Romney

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

DES MOINES — Ron Paul is the Republican the Republican establishment wants to ignore. Right now they can’t seem to take their eyes off him. Many Republicans see him as a fringe candidate, a politician whose views on foreign policy and the legalization of drugs put him far outside the mainstream of the party. They would like to dismiss him, but here in Iowa it’s impossible to do so. Among the candidates, only Mitt Romney seems happy with the strength Paul is demonstrating. Read full article > >

Obama pushes boundaries in targeting al-Aulaqi

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

In authorizing the killing of an American citizen affiliated with al-Qaeda, President Obama has starkly affirmed his willingness to use high-risk, violent tactics against declared enemies. The drone strike against Anwar al-Aulaqi, which the White House on Friday refused to acknowledge publicly, burnishes Obama’s national security credentials as he heads into an election year when the strength of his leadership will undoubtedly be questioned. For Barney Frank, no Fed dissent will do

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

“If two people always agree,” says Ben Bernanke, “one of them is redundant.” So imagine what the Federal Reserve chairman thinks of Rep. Barney Frank’s legislation designed to dampen dissent within the Fed . Fond of diversity in everything but thought, a certain kind of liberal favors mandatory harmony (e.g., campus speech codes ). Such liberals, being realists at least about the strength of their arguments, discourage “too much” debate about them (e.g., restrictions on campaign spending to disseminate political advocacy). Now Frank wants to strip the presidents of the Fed’s 12 regional banks of their right to vote as members of the policymaking Federal Open Market Committee . Read full article > >

Virginians voting in primary elections

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

VIRGINIA VOTERS go to the polls Tuesday in primary contests to select candidates in a smattering of races for the state Senate, House of Delegates, county Boards of Supervisors, Commonwealth’s Attorneys and county sheriffs. The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. In some districts, a tough challenger will await the primary winner in the fall’s general elections. In others, where voters of one or the other party hold a commanding majority, the primary contest is tantamount to election. The Post has endorsed candidates in three Democratic primary races in Northern Virginia where retirements or political moves have left open seats, including two Democratic-leaning Senate districts. In the 30th Senate District, which includes south Arlington and parts of Alexandria and southeastern Fairfax County, there are two strong candidates: Adam P. Ebbin, a member of the House of Delegates, and K. Rob Krupicka , a member of the Alexandria City Council. We endorsed Mr. Krupicka on the strength of his experience in the private sector and his expertise on education. Read full article > >
