Navy to place breath-test machines on all its ships

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

NORFOLK, Va. — In 1913, Navy Secretary Josephus Daniels issued a revolutionary order: no more alcohol on board ships. According to official Navy myth , sober sailors mocked their boss by nicknaming their coffee — the strongest drink still allowed on board — a “cup of Joe.” Read full article > >

Editorial Board: A welcome rise in manufacturing jobs in the U.S.

Friday, January 13th, 2012

FAIRLY OR UNFAIRLY, President Obama gets blamed for economic disappointments on his watch . By the same token, he gets to crow when things go well — whether he deserves credit or not. So he was entitled on Wednesday to trumpet the fact that U.S. manufacturing employment grew by 334,000 jobs over the last two years — the strongest two-year growth since the late 1990s. That’s good news for Mr. Obama’s reelection campaign, for the people who got jobs — and for the country, which had been shedding manufacturing jobs even before the Great Recession. Andray Blatche is not qualified to be Washington Wizards captain

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Washington Wizards forward and captain Andray Blatche , who is about as qualified to lead a team as he would be a space shuttle mission, struggled Monday while Washington squandered a 21-point first-half lead in its season-opening loss to the New Jersey Nets. Outscored, outrebounded and — worst of all — outhustled by his Nets counterpart, Blatche, beginning his seventh NBA season, reaffirmed that he’s still clueless when he criticized Coach Flip Saunders for failing to use him correctly. Only a few hours after thanking fans at Verizon Center for supporting the Wizards , Blatche turned on Saunders, the man he is expected to back the strongest. Read full article > >

MIAMI — Forecasters say Hurricane Kenneth has strengthened even more into a Category 4 storm in the eastern Pacific, although there is no current threat to land. It is the strongest late-season hurricane in that area on record. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Tuesday that Kenneth has maximum sustained winds near 145 mph (230 kph). The storm was centered about 750 miles (1,210 kilometers) south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico, but was moving away from the coast. Read full article > >

Bibi’s Attack on Israeli Democracy

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

This article, written by Aslan Media Founder Reza Aslan, originally appeared on WashingtonPost.com on November 15, 2011 American politicians are always calling Israel the one true democracy in the Middle East. Compared to most of other nations in the region (with the exception of Turkey), Israel certainly boasts the strongest democratic institutions, the freest society, and by far the most accountable government. Yet under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, and thanks in large part to a gradual but extreme rightward shift within Israel’s political class, the very foundation of the country’s democracy has been steadily eroding.

5.6 magnitude quake rocks central Oklahoma on day of quakes; officials report no injuries

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

SPARKS, Okla. — A 5.6 magnitude quake rocked central Oklahoma late Saturday after a day of smaller quakes, leaving cracked buildings and a buckled highway but no major damage. The temblor was so strong it rattled a college football stadium 50 miles away and could be felt in Tennessee. The quake, centered about 44 miles northeast of Oklahoma City, may be the strongest in state history if the reading is confirmed by the U.S. Geological Survey after it initially reported a 5.2 magnitude event. Emergency authorities had no immediate reports of injuries or major damages. But the quake shook a packed college football stadium as fans departed just minutes after third-ranked Oklahoma State had beaten No. 17 Kansas State. Read full article > >

In Ohio, praise and questions for Herman Cain

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

CINCINNATI — First impressions are important in politics, and no one has introduced himself better in the campaign for the Republican presidential nomination than businessman Herman Cain . Cain has surged in just about every national or state poll this month, to the point that he is now in a virtual tie with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney , who many see as the front-runner. The latest CBS-New York Times poll put Cain ahead of Romney, though within the margin of error. A Quinnipiac University poll of Ohio voters showed him narrowly ahead of Romney. Texas Gov. Rick Perry , once seen as the strongest challenger to Romney, ran fifth in both surveys. Read full article > >

D.C. commissions a schools analysis

Friday, August 19th, 2011

The Gray administration has commissioned an Illinois firm with close ties to the charter school movement to study how D.C. neighborhoods are served by the public education system and help officials decide which schools should be closed and where new ones might be opened. The study by the Illinois Facilities Fund is the strongest signal yet that Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) is prepared to treat charter schools — which are publicly funded but independently operated — as full partners in a reform effort that was heavily focused on traditional schools during the tenure of his predecessor, Adrian M. Fenty (D). About 40 percent of the 75,000 D.C. public school students attend charter schools. Read full article > >
