Elliott Smith: “New” song from 1997 WMUC session unearthed

Monday, November 21st, 2011

How does a song by an iconic musician get lost and then found? Here’s one way. One afternoon in 1997, an emerging 27-year-old singer-songwriter named Elliott Smith performed at WMUC-FM , the student run radio station at the University of Maryland, College Park. The station regularly hosted punk and indie acts on its live-in-the-studio Third Rail Radio program and Smith’s performance wasn’t anything out of the ordinary — just him and his guitar, playing around 10 songs in WMUC’s unadorned recording studio on the fourth floor of South Campus Dining Hall. Howard University student argues self-defense in altercation with roommate

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

A Howard University student charged with felony assault was defending herself during a fight with her roommate last month when she grabbed a pot of hot water from the stove and threw the water on her, the student’s attorney said during a hearing Wednesday in D.C. Superior Court. Defense attorney Kelli Neptune said her client, Kierstyn Jeffries, 20, was being bullied by her roommate when she reached for the pot and hurled the water onto her, leaving her roommate with second- and third-degree burns across her chest. What would Martin Luther King Jr. say to President Obama?

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Forty-eight years ago Sunday, when Martin Luther King Jr. was about to make his historic speech on the National Mall, I was huddled close to the statue of Abraham Lincoln, tapping on a portable typewriter, making last-minute changes to my own speech. As the newly elected chair of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee, speaking at the March on Washington was one of my first important actions. Dr. King spoke tenth; I was sixth. Today, I am the last surviving speaker from the march. When I think back on that day, and the hundreds of thousands of people who responded to the call to march on Washington, there is no question that many things have changed. Then, Martin Luther King Jr. was a controversial figure taking risks so that his voice might be heard. Today, the mere mention of his speech — and its powerful “I have a dream” refrain — evokes hope for the future, stirring memories of the past and mandates for change, but the context in which Dr. King delivered those words was quite different. Montgomery student wields power on school board

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

When the Montgomery County Board of Education chose its first new superintendent in a dozen years, a 16-year-old high school junior from Rockville was among the eight board members to raise a hand. “I was humbled by the opportunity to cast a historic vote,” Alan Xie said. The opportunity to participate in the April 25 selection of Joshua P. Starr to replace the retiring Jerry D. Weast gave the student board member a great sense of responsibility and not a small sense of wonder. “Before the vote, I told my dad, ‘I’m going to be hiring a guy who will make more than you do,’ ” he said. (Starr’s base salary will be $250,000 a year.) Read full article > >

Just The Same Old Dumb

Friday, January 21st, 2011

I endured a moment of deep crisis on Thursday, upon realizing that there might actually be more Pure Dumb in the world than I was aware of. Now, understand that I have been a Chronicler of Dumb for a very long time now. I am a Student of Dumb, and a well-worn one at that. I got my Bachelor’s Degree in the Study of Dumb during the Clinton impeachment. I got my Masters in the aftermath of the 2000 (s)election. read more
