Let’s say the protests over SOPA and PIPA succeed, and Congress nixes its online-piracy bills. That’s not a foregone conclusion yet, though more and more senators have been backing off . What then? Should Congress create a better anti-piracy bill? Or just drop the subject altogether? Read full article > >

Now is the time for President Obama to complete his evolution on the subject of same-sex marriage. Supporting the right of all Americans to marry the person of their choice would be the right thing to do. Strange as this may sound, it might also be good politics. More to the point, it would not be the almost certainly disastrous political move it would have been even in the last presidential campaign, when none of the major Democratic candidates supported the right to marry. PORTLAND, Texas — Hillary Adams says that until last week, only a couple of close friends knew about the savage beating she received seven years ago from her father, a Texas judge who handles child abuse cases. Now the beating is on display to the world on YouTube thanks to a secret video she made, and her father, Aransas County Court-at-Law Judge William Adams, is the subject of a police investigation. Using minimal theatrics and the testimony of real soldiers, “ReEntry” creates a stage document about an aspect of military life that few of us back home ever fully understand: the trials of reabsorption into the civilian world. It’s a topic that’s treated quite often on TV and in movies and even lately on the stage, in the form of the thrilling Scottish war play “ Black Watch .” But it’s useful to be immersed in the subject again, which “ReEntry” accomplishes with a heap of integrity and an admirable absence of helping-profession jargon. It’s impossible to be in two places at once, at least by the rules of classic physics. But filmmakers can simulate multiple points of view by cutting quickly between different camera angles. Barbara Probst, whose large-format multiphoto pieces are on display at G Fine Art , does something similar. She sets up two or more cameras around her subject and releases their shutters simultaneously with a remote control, thus capturing several facets of the same instant. The technique is a bit like the one Akira Kurosawa used for such action epics as “ Seven Samurai .” Read full article > >

Yesterday, I went on WNYC’s Soundcheck to talk about which orchestras, amid all the dire news of bankruptcies and strikes, might represent a new model, a way of doing things right. I’m not sure my views on the subject were suited to the rubric of “let’s talk positive,” because, as the field is learning very painfully right now, there are no right answers, and there certainly isn’t an answer that fits every orchestra. The problem with orchestras as an institution is that they can create the illusion that art can be institutionalized, when in fact it remains as individual as the people who create it. If you have a visionary, charismatic music director, you’re going to do better than if you have one who isn’t charismatic, however great his ideas are. If you have a terrible board, either too passive or too hands-on, the best artistic agenda in the world isn’t going to pull you out of the hole. Read full article > >

New absurdly allegorical paintings by Edward del Rosario Set against monochrome backgrounds, painter Edward del Rosario ‘s fairytale-like scenes depict people counterposed with nature in charmingly unsettling ways. The Brooklyn-based artist has been exploring the subject for the past eight years, each piece adding to a larger meta-narrative that explores the “aftermath of a post-colonial world.” His latest installment of curious paintings will show at L.A.’s Richard Heller gallery in the upcoming exhibition simply titled ” Fable .” An active performance artist while earning his MFA at RISD, del Rosario’s theatrical roots are evidenced by the comedically tense or absurd situations in which he carefully depicts his characters. The melodramatic situations often depict his characters’ misunderstandings of each other and their conflicts over the balance of power. As explained in a 2009 interview with Lowdown Magazine , del Rosario’s performances, influenced by absurdist playwright Eugene Ionesco, still inform his painterly study of social interaction and group mentality. “Fable” is on view at the Richard Heller Gallery from 26 March 2011 through 30 April 2011.
