Huge Apple store opening at NYC’s Grand Central, likely to draw business to transit hub

NEW YORK — One of the world’s largest Apple stores is opening at the landmark Grand Central Terminal. The 23,000-square-foot personal electronics business will start selling to the public on Friday. The owner of the space, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the city’s bus and subway system, says Apple Inc. is paying $180 per square foot for its lease — slightly less than the $200-per-square-foot top rate at the century-old Manhattan train hub. McDonnell appoints member to Metro board of directors

RICHMOND — Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell appointed lawyer James Dyke on Friday to serve on Metro’s board of directors as he seeks to exert some long-sought authority over the second-busiest subway system in the nation. The move was met by criticism and confusion from local leaders in Northern Virginia who said they resent McDonnell’s administration trying to influence a regional issue they understand better. Whenever I visit New York I’m a little tempted to move there permanently. In years past, the fantastic subway system beckoned. When I visited in March, the pedestrian walkways called my name. And last week when I was in the Big Apple for the BlogHer ’10 conference, the wide inviting bike lanes urged me to stay.
