Motivated by hunger, the reviled animals descend each night from neighboring hills to feed on the garbage bins of Islamabad’s most exclusive addresses — from high-end hotels to the capital’s embassies and even the president’s residence. On their way to feeding grounds pigs cause traffic accidents and send locals hurrying for cover. Some Islamabad residents have reportedly been injured or even killed by belligerent hogs. BANGKOK — As floodwaters drained from Thailand’s flood-ravaged central heartland through Bangkok on Monday, residents in long-submerged provinces to the north of the capital were starting to rebuild their lives. The water slowly advancing through Bangkok’s northern and western neighborhoods was threatening the city’s subway system, two key industrial estates and the emergency headquarters set up to deal with flooding that has claimed more than 500 lives nationwide. SANAA, Yemen — Hundreds of Yemeni women on Wednesday set fire to traditional female veils to protest the government’s brutal crackdown against the country’s popular uprising, as overnight clashes in the capital and another city killed 25 people, officials said. In the capital Sanaa, the women spread a black cloth across a main street and threw their full-body veils, known as makrama, onto a pile, sprayed it with oil and set it ablaze. SANAA, Yemen — Troops loyal to Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and forces opposed to his rule were engaged in heavy fighting across much of the capital Sanaa on Monday, with rockets, mortars and heavy machine-guns being used.
