When a Georgia native named Freddie settles down on a chair near the wrought ironwork of a Southern veranda, carefully adjusting the rings on his fingers as he recalls his turbulent childhood, he likely doesn’t realize the metaphorical aptness of his location. Freddie, one of the characters in “Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South,” E. Patrick Johnson’s earnest, studiously poignant, humor-leavened solo show, suffered vicious bullying as a youngster — at least he did until (as he relates with a hint of glee) he solved the problem by using a razor blade on one of his tormentors. Like the iron that has gone into the veranda’s filigreed railings, in other words, Freddie has endured great stresses and emerged from them, resilient and imposing. Read full article > >

New ‘Toy Story’ Images Invade Net New Toy Story images? But … how? We previously told you that Pixar has created a new short film featuring the characters from Toy Story to play before Cars 2 this summer. The short will follow Ken and Barbie as they unsuccessfully plan a trip to Hawaii, only to have all the other toys band together to give those love-birds the “pretend” vacation of their dreams. Watch it on the big screen this June 24th, and check out both new images over at Entertainment Weekly, one of which you can see in this post. Who Will Be the New Jason Bourne? Well, actually, no one. They won’t be using the character of Jason Bourne in the next Bourne-related movie, The Bourne Legacy, which sounds weird, but apparently they have a plan… Read More Read Comments

New Wii role-playing figures transport your character anywhere Among the many new exciting games and oddities at the 2011 Toy Fair , Activision’s latest gaming experience for the Nintendo Wii stood out for its fresh take on role-playing games. Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure is action-packed entertainment that lets player interaction cross between the game and real worlds. The game includes over 30 characters, each with distinct personalities and skill sets that offer unique advantages for many of the challenges and puzzles. Beyond their in-game form, the characters have a physical representation as an “interaction figure.” Essentially a toy with a brain, the figure is capable of remembering specific player information so you can take your character on the road. The game will incorporate a physical gateway, “The Portal of Power,” which is a dock allowing players to transition their character from the real world to the game world. Using the portal, players can easily tap into the game at a friend’s house and never have to worry about losing earned skills, letting them bring their custom characters anywhere for co-op or player versus player battles. Written by Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow of Toy Story fame, the game’s narrative combined with its unique interactive nature makes it a very promising new approach to continuous role playing games. Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure will be available Fall 2011.

Like Joyce’s Dubliners, many of the characters in these stories can’t escape their homeland.

Gareth Edwards to Direct Godzilla Apparently studio bosses saw enough in Gareth Edwards’ low-budgeted genre debut Monsters that they wanted him behind the next Godzilla update. Legendary Pictures will co-produce with Warner Bros. (both of whom are behind The Dark Knight, 300 and others), and Edwards will work on piecing together a script written by David Callaham.
