FBI’s James McJunkin, head of Washington Field Office, ‘leads by example’

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

The FBI agents scoured the charred lavatory of the commercial jet but couldn’t find the lighter or matches that ignited the suspicious in-flight fire. There was only one more place to look: the toilet’s discharge tank. Normally, such dirty duty would go to a rookie. But agent James W. McJunkin , a supervisor, stepped forward and volunteered to collect the fluid in a large bin as it drained from the fuselage. Within minutes, his dress shirt had been ruined by the disgusting blue liquid. Read full article > >

Nathan Anda’s food cart offers a hot dog with real bite

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

Before a small army of Washington food trucks plotted a revolution in 2009, as if they were the street-eats embodiment of the new “Change We Can Believe In” president, locals had learned to live with the curbside snack that defined the city: the dirty-water hot dog. It’s an emulsified frank, seemingly no different from the commercial wieners that can inspire New Yorkers to wax rhapsodic about their ’kraut-covered dogs. The familiar blue-and-yellow umbrellas that color our downtown streets would appear to advertise the dominant link found here — the Sabrett all-beef frankfurter in a natural casing for that satisfying, first-bite snap. AU spokesman: Peacekeeping force surrounding Somali key insurgent stronghold of Bakara market

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A spokesman for the African Union force in Somalia says AU soldiers are surrounding a key insurgent stronghold in the capital of Mogadishu. Paddy Ankunda says peacekeepers advanced their positions on Sunday and are now on the southern and western sides of Bakara market. The market is the commercial heart of Mogadishu and taxes levied on its businessmen are an important source of funding for the insurgency. Ankunda did not say whether AU soldiers would enter the market, a deadly labyrinth of winding alleys and tall buildings. The AU has previously said it will not enter Bakara but will seek to control access to it. Read full article > >

W/Heart

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

Bunnies and black magic in a bi-coastal illustrator’s new line of home furnishings While brands making up stories is nothing new, it’s increasingly more common to see products like W/Heart , which founder Jacqueline Bos conceived around the very idea of “things that have a story behind them, things that you can see the care put into making them.” While the collection of textile housewares builds on the past five years that Bos has worked as a printmaker, she’s no stranger to the commercial world, having worked clients as varied as independent fashion designers AIRA to MySpace, for which she designed the recently-launched new theme. Bos has also found success by selling her print work through Urban Outfitters’ collaborative print shop with Society6 , and a recent illustration of hers for M. Ward’s album The Transfiguration of Vincent ended up in Uppercase Magazine. “I heard he lives in Portland now,” said Bos, who splits her time between the City of Roses and Brooklyn. “Matt! If you’re reading this, you should totally come over for coffee, drawing and music time.” Anchoring W/Heart’s laid-back sensibility, the napkins, pillow cases and stuffed animals shows the same rigorous attention to detail as her print work. Bos prints each item by hand with water-based inks on organic cotton, hand-sewing each so as not to waste any fabric. While the craftsmanship of each piece is unmistakable, Bos admits that producing W/Heart is pretty hard work. “I haven’t decided yet about a follow-up collection. This ended up being a much larger undertaking than I had initially anticipated.” W/Heart sells online , with prices spanning $35 to $60.
