The Huguely case: What makes for a media mob?

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

In a famous essay about crime and the British press , George Orwell identified the kinds of murder cases that excited the news media and titillated the public. The victims, he wrote, tended to be middle-class; the alleged perpetrators were seemingly respectable members of the community; the motives were typically sexual or romantic in nature. And none of the cases was open and shut, leaving ample room to speculate about the outcome. Read full article > >

‘Life is good’ in Iowa’s Washington, but the candidates keep raising alarms

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

It is the final day of his best year at work, and Keith Lazar, 62, settles into his corner office at the community bank. He eats a doughnut with a fork and turns on an instrumental CD titled “Relaxation.” Outside his office window, the town square is bustling with proof of his impact during the past 12 months: trucks financed by his loans, restaurants expanding because of his savings advice and small businesses created with his support. Egyptian American Community Foundation Opens Brooklyn Office

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

The Egyptian American Community Foundation has been around for nearly a decade, supporting humanitarian and social incentives both in Egypt and in New York City. This summer, the Foundation, which is a non-profit, opened an office in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn because it wanted to focus on community serviced based work.  Bay Ridge is home to a large Arab-American community. Its top three demographics are Egyptian, Yemeni, and Moroccan. “Previously, we were based on fundraising, we worked a lot with Habitat for Humanity and did a lot of things overseas in Egypt rather than in the community itself,” explained Asmi Fathelbab, who works out of the Bay Ridge office. “People are always under the assumption that the [Bay Ridge] population is Palestinian, but it’s really not,” Fathelbab said, adding that the Egyptian community has been established for quite some time, but some members are still adjusting. The Foundation offers a plethora of services to all communities in the neighborhood. It’s goal is to help new immigrants get acclimated with their new society and offer them services that even many American-born people do not know how to acquire, such as immigration lawyers, tax help or where to get food stamps.

Picnic showcases mainstream Islam in Northern Virginia

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

One day after al-Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki was killed by a U.S. drone strike in Yemen, Northern Virginia Muslims he once worshiped alongside gathered for an event that was both a community gathering and an effort to portray a version of Islam much different from the one he espoused. The timing of Saturday’s annual Civic Picnic of the All Dulles Muslim Society (ADAMS) in Sterling, which attracted about 200 people, was purely coincidental. But in recent years, it has become an important component of the community’s outreach efforts. Read full article > >

Louisiana redistricting case seen as crucial test of Voting Rights Act

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

In a racially mixed corner of Shreveport, La., a small group of white voters protested loudly this year that they did not want to be part of a majority black district when the legislature redrew the state’s political boundaries. The Republican-led statehouse complied, drawing a line around the community to accommodate them. That line is at the heart of a case before the Justice Department that is seen as a critical test of how the Obama administration will interpret the controversial Voting Rights Act as it rules on a new wave of redistricting plans. De-Legitimizing Public Education

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

The quality of American education is going to get worse. Count on it. And contrary to the conventional wisdom, the main reason isn’t going to be the loss of funding accompanying economic hard times. Follow along and I’ll explain: Step One: Start with what was once a relatively simple educational system. (For me, it was a one-room school with 16 or so kids ranging in age from about 6 to 15, and a teacher who, it was taken for granted by the community, was a professional who knew what she was doing.) read more
