H ere’s something for critics of the country’s defense budget to ponder: After I was confirmed as secretary of the Navy in May 2001, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld asked me and the other service secretaries to work with Congress to gain approval for a pending supplemental appropriation to the defense budget. DALLAS – “Not about politics” is the part that even some of Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s most loyal supporters might question. The Dallas-based organization, which is the country’s biggest breast cancer charity, insisted its controversial decision to defund Planned Parenthood affiliates was made only in light of Komen’s new policy against supporting agencies that are under investigation. The U.S. military launched an airstrike against Yemen’s al-Qaeda affiliate on Tuesday, targeting an area of the country where the group is increasingly asserting its influence. At least a dozen people were killed in the strike, including insurgents from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and local militants, according to some reports.
