The Mideast’s new game

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

CAIRO Diplomatic versions of the three-cushion shot in billiards are perilous, but let’s suppose you could accomplish the following: Lift the stature of Egypt’s fragile transitional government, support Israel’s desire for Arab recognition, reanimate the Palestinian peace process and deal a blow to Iran. The coming squirrel famine

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

U.S. Open 2011: From nobody to leading the Open

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Three years ago, Justin Hicks stood in the fairway on the sixth hole at Torrey Pines Golf Course on the outskirts of San Diego and heard the following from a pair of spectators outside the ropes: “That’s Justin Hicks. That’s the guy leading the U.S. Open.” Hicks looked down, knocked that around in his brain — I am leading the U.S. Open — and tried to collect his thoughts. His world ranking at the time: 722. His job status: a conditional member of the minor league Nationwide Tour, meaning he couldn’t gain entry into all the events he wanted to play. There, he reached a playoff and birdied the first hole — a berth. And when he sat in a news conference after that first round, having made seven birdies and shooting 68 to lead the Open, someone asked: “Who are you?” Read full article > >

Indian Justice: Punishment by Trial?

Friday, December 31st, 2010

New Delhi, India – Consider the following scenario: A much-admired man points out gross human rights violations committed against tribal peoples — including alleged rapes, murders, etc. But the state consistently seeks to cover up the incidents this man exposes, and instead uses a colonial-era law against free speech to sentence him to life in prison. If this were China and its Nobel Prize-winning dissident Liu Xiaobo, it would come as no surprise. But, brace yourself, this is cuddly India we’re talking about. read more
