Roe v. Wade at 39: A ‘breathtaking’ year for abortion restrictions

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Today is the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade , the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. Charmaine Yoest is the president of Americans United for Life , the country’s oldest antiabortion organization, formed shortly before the Roe decision. The group frequently works with state legislators, writing model abortion restrictions that get adapted and passed across the country, and saw a particularly successful year in 2011. Americans United for Life was involved with 28 laws that passed last year, including ones that bar insurers from covering abortion and others that defund abortion providers. Yoest and I spoke earlier this week about today’s anniversary of Roe v. Wade, how abortion rights changed in the past year, and what she sees happening in 2012. What follows is a transcript, lightly edited for content and length. Read full article > >

A few cracks in my crystal ball

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Pundits say the darndest things on television. Take, for example, the genius who said in January that “the president has a fairly easy” reelection ahead of him. Or the guy who said in June that Newt Gingrich was “finished, whether he knows he is or not.” How about the talking head who said in July that House Speaker John Boehner had suffered a “mortal wound” at the hands of fellow Republicans? Or the one who predicted in August that Rick Perry would “hold his own” in the presidential debates? Read full article > >

For Obama campaign, reasons for optimism

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Against the backdrop of a tightening Republican presidential contest, much of the hierarchy of President Obama’s campaign is decamping from Chicago to Washington on Tuesday for a high-profile debriefing on the the state of the president’s reelection effort. The message will be predictably upbeat. For Obama advisers in need of a little lift after months of bad news, there have been some encouraging signs in recent weeks. Read full article > >

With the Plan B decision, the Obama administration broke its promise

Friday, December 9th, 2011

It was a proud moment, in the East Room of the White House, on a beautiful spring day in March 2009. In the room were leading scientists, Nobel laureates, the president’s science adviser and heads of organizations that had fought in support of scientific integrity in research and in government. I was excited to have been invited to watch President Obama sign a memorandum on scientific integrity . Read full article > >

White House to Rick Perry: We won’t respond to ‘struggling … campaigns’

Friday, December 9th, 2011

GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry had some fighting words for President Obama in his new “Strong” ad campaign this week. In a 31-second soft-focus spot, the Texas governor questions the president’s faith and declares that Obama’s policies, including allowing gays to serve openly in the military, amount to a “war on religion.” Read full article > >

James Taylor, Kris Kristofferson, Lyle Lovett, Alison Krauss and others celebrate country music at White House

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

After a tough day at the Oval Office — markets collapsing, supercommittees evaporating — President Obama seemed ready to do what so many Americans do when the weight feels too heavy: find solace in a country song. “Tonight we’re transforming the East Room into a bona fide country music hall,” the president declared at the White House on Monday evening. (Instead of a collective yee-haw , the audience responded with a pitter of golf clapping.) Read full article > >

Antoinette Pinchot Bradlee’s understated beauty, quiet charm and her second marriage, to future Washington Post executive editor Benjamin C.
