Syria releases 552 prisoners under Arab League plan for stopping months of bloodshed

BEIRUT — Syria’s state-run TV says authorities have released 552 prisoners who were involved in anti-regime activities during the nine-month uprising against President Bashar Assad. It is the second group of prisoners to be released in a week under an Arab League plan meant to stop the government’s crackdown on dissent, which has claimed thousands of lives. Besides halting the violence, the plan calls for the release of all political prisoners. About 3,500 were freed on Tuesday. Read full article > >

An interfaith delegation of religious leaders from Washington didn’t come home from Iran on Monday with the news it had hoped for, but members said they remain optimistic about what they call the “imminent” release of two U.S. hikers. The delegation hoped to return with hikers Shane Bauer and Joshua Fattal, who have been jailed on spying charges since July 2009. But members of the group said conversations with Iranian authorities led them to believe that the release of the men, who maintain that they accidentally crossed the Iraq-Iran border, could come within days.
