The Hussein-Gaddafi nexus

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Supporters of the Iraq war continue to argue that the invasion of that country paved the way for the Arab Spring. Over the weekend, former presidential envoy L. Paul “Jerry” Bremer wrote in this newspaper of certain similarities he saw between the two countries in the post-dictator world. First, Moammar Gaddafi ’s death “came eight months after the start of military operations there,” Bremer writes, “the same length of time it took us to track down Saddam Hussein after U.S. forces liberated Baghdad in 2003.” Read full article > >

Want better wireless service in America? Socialize it.

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Imagine you’re headed out of town for the weekend in your new Prius. If you don’t own a Prius, don’t worry — this is an alternate reality. You’re leaving Maryland for New York City and looking forward to a leisurely afternoon drive. But there’s a snag — a big one. A small group of private companies actually owns the roads, and they want you to follow their rules — so you can’t get to New York unless you drive a sport-utility vehicle. To get on Interstate 95 north, you’ve got to have an Escalade or an Explorer. On the other hand, the company that owns the roads around Washington allows only green cars, so those big SUVs have no way of getting from New York to vast swaths of Maryland. Read full article > >

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

Irene was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm Sunday, but the weekend already was a lost cause for many theaters in its path. Studio executives estimate that about 1,000 theaters shut down for at least part of the weekend and that business may have been off 15 to 20 percent because of the storm. Read full article > >
