LONDON – A judge sentenced two white men to at least 14 years in prison on Wednesday for killing a black teenager 18 years ago, a case that exposed racism in Scotland Yard and prompted discussions about race relations in Britain. UBS expects Q3 profit despite $2.3 billion rogue trading loss

GENEVA — Swiss banking group UBS said Tuesday it expects credit gains and bond sales to help it record a modest profit in the third quarter, despite a $2.3 billion rogue trading loss. Only last month, Switzerland’s biggest bank warned that it might be forced to report an overall loss for the three months ending in September in light of unauthorized trading from London-based trader Kweku Adoboli. Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III has proposed delaying the hiring of police officers, firefighters and corrections officers after a gloomy housing market led to a deeper-than-expected drop in tax collections. Prompted by a $5.4 million shortfall, the proposal would postpone by at least two or three months the hiring of 165 police officers, 60 firefighters and 32 corrections officers, officials said. Baker (D), who took office in December, is also seeking to scale back snow removal contracts and to eliminate funding for a popular tree- and flower-planting event. Read full article > >
