HONOLULU — The Obama administration is reviewing a request from Yemen’s former president to enter the United States to receive medical treatment, a senior administration official said Sunday. Ali Abdullah Saleh, who relinquished power to his vice president Friday, told reporters over the weekend that he was planning to come to the United States to relieve tension after nine people were killed by government forces during mass protests related to the end of Saleh’s 33-year reign. TEHRAN — Iranian officials on Tuesday demanded an apology from the Obama administration before they would even consider any U.S. request to return a surveillance drone that Iran captured earlier this month. “President Obama should not forget that that the Iranian airspace was clearly violated by the U.S. drone, and therefore the U.S. should first apologize for that,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told reporters Tuesday. In a Congress crippled by partisan gridlock, each side is increasingly transparent about its political motivations. It used to be that the various press operations would spin and the leaders would at least pretend to lead. But in recent years, all pretense has fallen away. Last week, for example, when asked about the status of a jobs proposal, Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) came clean about the factors affecting his scheduling of votes — mainly the desire for media coverage. “We’re not going to do that at midnight tonight. We’re going to have the votes when you folks can write about it during a decent news cycle,” Reid told reporters on Thursday. Read full article > >

NEW DELHI — In the world’s largest democracy, the government wants Internet sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Google to screen and remove offensive content about religious figures and political leaders as soon as they learn about it. But those companies now say they can’t help. India’s minister of communications Kapil Sibal began discussions with the online companies in September. On Tuesday, he told reporters the government will have to create new guidelines to disable such content from the Internet sites on its own. Read full article > >

NEW YORK — The board of the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) voted Monday to admit Palestine into the organization as its newest member, and the United States promptly responded by cutting off funding for the agency. Acting under a legal requirement to cut U.S. funds to any U.N. agency that recognizes a Palestinian state, the State Department on Monday announced that the United States has stopped funding UNESCO because of the vote. Department spokesman Victoria Nuland told reporters that the Obama administration would not make a planned $60 million payment to the agency due in November. Read full article > >

The uneasy relationship between Mitt Romney and the evangelical wing of the Republican Party over his Mormon religion has been part of the quiet subtext of the primary contest so far. On Friday, the quiet ended. At the Values Voters summit in Washington, prominent evangelical leader Robert Jeffress told reporters that Mormonism was a cult and that Romney was not a Christian. PATUXENT RIVER NAVAL AIR STATION, Md. — With the Navy’s Blue Angels and their F/A-18 Hornets arrayed in a neat line behind him, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus announced that they would perform in the Labor Day Air Expo using a 50-50 mix of a plant-based biofuel and conventional fuel. “It’s part of our process to move to alternative energy all across the Navy,” Mabus told reporters gathered on the sun-baked runway before him on Sept. 1. “The main reason we’re moving toward alternative fuels in the Navy and the Marine Corps is to make us better war fighters.” Read full article > >

The rain had already started falling early in practice Monday when Mike Shanahan gathered his players together and ended the summer-long suspense surrounding the team’s starting quarterback position. Teammates began clapping when the Redskins’ coach anointed Rex Grossman the victor, naming the nine-year veteran as the starter for Sunday’s season opener against the New York Giants . “Rex won it by an edge,” Shanahan told reporters later. Shanahan said he met with both Grossman and John Beck over the weekend and wanted to share his decision with the team before players began preparations for the Giants. He praised both quarterbacks and said each was capable, but Shanahan also made clear he intends to use Grossman for the entirety of the season. Read full article > >

Twelve hours removed from a controversy about his suggestion that Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke was engaging in “treasonous” behavior Texas Gov. Rick Perry ’s presidential campaign didn’t try to walk back the remark. In fact, they doubled down on it. “I am passionate about the issue but I stand by what I said,” Perry told reporters in Iowa today . Although Perry’s campaign is only a few days old, the episode provides a telling insight into the Texas governor: he is brash, bold and unapologetic about being so. Read full article > >

A District police officer was recovering from surgery Saturday after being shot three times by a 15-year-old boy at a home in Northeast, police said. D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said the 27-year-old officer, whom she declined to name, was in good condition after being shot in the neck, shoulder and chest about 5:10 a.m. outside a home in the 700 block of Crittenden Street NE. The officer’s protective vest stopped the bullet to his chest, she said. “He’s in pretty good spirits, considering,” Lanier told reporters at a briefing Saturday afternoon. Read full article > >
