Martinelly guilty of felony murder in drunken-driving crash that killed one nun, injured two others, in Va.

An illegal immigrant who was charged with drunken driving last year when he struck a car carrying three nuns, killing one and injuring the others, was convicted Monday of felony murder. Carlos A. Martinelly-Montano’s case ignited outrage and prompted calls for stricter immigration enforcement. During a hearing in Prince William Circuit Court, the facts of what happened Aug. 1, 2010, were not in dispute: Martinelly-Montano swerved his Subaru into a guardrail and then veered into the opposite lane on a slim, two-lane road in Bristow, colliding with the nuns’ blue Toyota. U.S. auto sales hit the skids in May, dropping 3.7 percent from a year earlier — a serious setback for the industry as supply shortages and gas prices took their toll. The steepest declines were at Toyota (off 33 percent), Honda (23 percent) and Nissan (9.1 percent), all of which ran short of models because of parts shortages caused by the March earthquake in Japan. Safety panel: Toyota should listen more to customers

Toyota management gave too little weight to feedback from customers, regulators and independent rating agencies, and centered too much control in its Japanese headquarters, according to the report of a special review panel convened after complaints of unintended acceleration forced the automaker to recall millions of cars . The panel, chaired by former U.S. Transportation secretary Rodney Slater, reported that the company apparently did not apply some of its principles of continuous improvement “as quickly and thoroughly as it could have in investigating and seeking out the root causes of customer complaints” about problems such as unintended acceleration.
