The Influence Industry: ‘Candidate super PACs’ surge ahead in the 2012 money race

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Until this month, Steven C. Roche was one of Mitt Romney’s most trusted advisers, helping the former Massachusetts governor raise tens of millions of dollars in his long quest for the White House. Now Roche has jumped ship to Restore Our Future , a “super PAC” dedicated to helping Romney win the presidency by raising unlimited funds from wealthy donors and corporations. The move, first reported by the Center for Public Integrity, illustrates the rise of yet another money-raising vehicle for the 2012 elections: “candidate super PACs,” which are emerging as de facto subsidiaries of the traditional presidential campaigns. Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Fewer Americans plan to launch their summer season behind the wheel of an automobile this year, but a bump in air travel plans suggests that, overall, more people intend to get away from home this summer. The high price of gas will deter some people from driving over Memorial Day weekend, the traditional kickoff of summer in the United States, according to a national survey by AAA. With the price of gas $1.06 higher than it was a year ago — at $3.91 a gallon nationwide — the number of people who told AAA they would drive more than 50 miles from home slipped by 100,000 to 30.9 million. Rockassins

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Furni taps decades-old craftsmanship to make limited-edition moccasins Fresh from Canada, Furni’s new moccasins bring an urban sensibility to the traditional footwear. To make the crepe-soled shoes, Furni looked to a 40-year-old, family-owned company. Known for the craftsmanship they put into their snowshoes, moccasins and other Indian handcrafts, the company is the perfect fit with Furni’s commitment to artisan techniques. The resulting collaborative design is a men’s mid-height moccasin that hits at the ankle. Each caramel-colored shoe is made to order using the finest Brazilian leather in a Montreal workshop. The “Rockassins,” a limited edition, sell on a first come first serve basis at a cost of $98 per pair. Production begins 21 February 2010 and will ship to clients roughly three-five weeks later. Place your order on Furni’s site .
