The Transportation Security Administration is moving to fire more than 30 of its security personnel at Hawaii’s Honolulu International Airport after the discovery late last year that they were not properly screening checked bags for bombs, the TSA said Friday. A dozen more TSA workers face suspension, the TSA said. Those slated for firing included workers responsible for the actual screening, several supervisors and the federal security director for the Honolulu airport, the TSA said. “TSA holds its workforce to the highest ethical standards and we will not tolerate employees who in any way compromise the security of the traveling public,” TSA Administrator John Pistole said in a statement announcing the actions. Motorists who use the Intercounty Connector without an E-ZPass would have to pay 25 percent higher tolls, and beach-goers crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge would see their tolls double under a statewide toll increase proposed Thursday. The Maryland Transportation Authority said higher tolls are needed to repair its tunnels, bridges and highways and to pay for the $2.5 billion ICC and $1 billion worth of express toll lanes on Interstate 95 near Baltimore. If approved by the authority’s board this summer, it would be Maryland’s first statewide toll increase. For some facilities, such as the bay bridge, it would be the first toll increase since 1975, state officials said. Read full article > >

A month before he flew a plane carrying former U.S. senator Ted Stevens into an Alaskan mountain last summer, pilot Terry Smith seemed so unfocused on one occasion that an aviation museum staff member worried that he was unfit to fly their planes, according to testimony Tuesday before the National Transportation Safety Board . “There’s something wrong with Terry,” the staff member said, according to the testimony. The employee reported that he found the veteran Alaskan pilot “staring into space” like an “Alzheimer’s patient” as he was about to fly a plane at the Alaska museum. Read full article > >

Go ahead and raise your can of Pabst Blue Ribbon to the latest unofficial honor bestowed upon Washington: D.C. is apparently the sixth most hipster territory in America. (Before you roll your eyes, know that the term “hipster” is reaching the highest echelons of U.S. government: Bicycle-loving Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood was recently told he may even be one himself .) “I don’t even know what that term means,” he told the playfully accusatory Huffington Post. As temperatures along with gas prices rise, it seems a shame to confine our travels to cars. The Washington area, despite its density, offers many alternatives to those willing to get out on their two feet, or on two skinny tires. With the help of local trail users and advocates for walking and cycling, I’ve assembled a list of 20 trails to try this spring: Anacostia Tributary Trails. These are 25 miles of Anacostia Valley trails . Shane Farthing, executive director of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association: This beautiful network includes Sligo Creek, Northwest Branch, Northeast Branch, Paint Branch and Indian Head. It provides excellent connections throughout the inner suburbs. Jim Sebastian, a transportation planner with the District Department of Transportation, called them some of the most underrated trails in the region. Read full article > >

Metro and the District Department of Transportation plan to launch a pilot program this month that will replace paper student transit passes with electronic identification cards, similar to the SmarTrip fare card. The DC One Card contains a chip with ID information that can be used to track usage or restrict students from using the subsidized passes during non-school hours. But DOT spokesman John Lisle said the agency does not intend to use the cards for those purposes — unless directed to do so by Metro officials. Read full article > >

Lawmakers made the rounds on the Sunday talk shows to defend their parties’ positions on both the fiscal 2012 budget and whether the debt ceiling should be raised. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood discussed the debt limit and the rash of air traffic controllers falling asleep on the job respectively. Donald Trump also made an appearance, lambasting President Obama and taking a jab at fellow Republican and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.
