When Maryland’s first slots casino opened a year ago , it faced some tough odds. Even with a strategic location just off Interstate 95, motorists who didn’t know it was there were unlikely to discover it. Hollywood Casino Perryville , located in the northeastern corner of the state, isn’t visible from the tree-lined highway. That might be about to change in a really big way. Read full article > >

For a fruit that doesn’t fall far from the tree, the apple has sure gotten around. Thank the itinerant 19th-century orchardist John Chapman , known as Johnny Appleseed, for planting this import in much of the country and making it as American as Mom — at least in pie. But what about our delectable native fruit, the papaw ? Although it once thrived throughout the eastern United States, only a small percentage of Americans have ever tasted it, and those who have even heard of it tend to confuse it with the tropical papaya, which it definitely is not. Cold-hardy but tropical-tasting, it looks a bit like a mango, but with pale yellow, custardy, spoonable flesh and black, shiny, easy-to-remove seeds. Read full article > >

As the sun sank over the tree-lined Kampong Bay River, Kampot, a town on Cambodia’s southern coast, stirred to life. The locals, who’d spent much of the day hiding from the heat in their homes and shaded alleys, emerged into the atmospheric streets, where sun-stained, mustard-colored French colonial shop houses provide the backdrop to the rhythms of daily life. Old men with fedoras and graying sideburns gathered at a corner cafe to play chess, triumphantly thwacking hand-carved pieces against thick wooden boards. Small groups of boys fished on the banks of the river with homemade bamboo poles, while groups of teenagers with mussed and shaggy haircuts and wearing glittery T-shirts yelled “Hello!” and giggled at strolling tourists, who are a small but growing presence in this largely unexplored corner of Southeast Asia. Society has a tendency to worship and mythologize trees. Throughout history, many religions have sprung from the trunks of trees. Consider the Banyan trees of Hinduism, the Bodhi tree of Buddhism, and the Tree of Knowledge of Christianity. Others just enjoy the sentiment of a tree planted with a long-lost loved one.
