BEIRUT — The Turkish prime minister sharply criticized Syrian President Bashar al-Assad following an attack on buses carrying Turkish pilgrims Monday in central Syria, which wounded two people and marked a new low in an increasingly sour relationship between the two countries. “You can remain in power with tanks and cannons only up to a certain point. The day will come when you’ll also leave,” Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a conference in Istanbul. He also responded to Assad’s repeated condemnation of other countries’ interference in Syrian affairs , asking, “Why don’t you handle your own problem within yourself, without opening the way for outside interference?” Read full article > >

Turkey: earthquake kills at least 3, dozens trapped in area hit by deadly temblor last month

ANKARA, Turkey — An earthquake struck eastern Turkey on Wednesday night, killing at least three people and leaving dozens trapped in the rubble of toppled buildings damaged in a previous temblor, which had killed 600 people. About two-dozen buildings collapsed in the provincial capital of Van following a 5.7-magnitude quake, though most of them were empty or had been declared unfit because they were weakened by the earlier quake, according to media reports. ANKARA, Turkey — Turkish soldiers, air force bombers and helicopter gunships reportedly launched an incursion into Iraq on Wednesday, hours after Kurdish rebels killed 26 soldiers and wounded 22 others in multiple attacks along the border. Turkish authorities did not immediately confirm the incursion but the chief of the military as well as interior and defense ministers rushed to the border area while Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan canceled a visit to Kazakhstan. In this Aslan Media exclusive interview, contributor Flying Dutchslim sat down with flautist Ömer Faruk Tekbilek to discuss his music, inspiration, and Turkish roots. Born in 1951, Tekbilek is known for his performances on the ney, an ancient Middle Eastern cane flute. He also plays the Oud, Saz, Zurna and sings on many of his recordings. Tekbilek is the recipient of the 2003 “Best Artist” award from the Turkish Writers Association and was a nominee for the 2003 BBC World Music Award in the Middle East category. He has become a beloved icon in Turkey, connecting his many fans with historical and religious influences that were once suppressed.

U.S. considering Ankara’s request to base Predators in Turkey to fight a Kurdish group in northern Iraq

The Obama administration is considering a request from Turkey to base a fleet of Predator drones on Turkish soil for counterterrorism operations in northern Iraq, a decision that could strengthen a diplomatic alliance but drag the United States deeper into a regional conflict. The U.S. military has flown the unarmed Predators from Iraqi bases since 2007 and shared the planes’ surveillance video with Turkey as part of a secretive joint crackdown against fighters from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. Unless a new home for the Predators is found, however, the counterterrorism partnership could cease by Dec. 31, when all U.S. forces are scheduled to withdraw from Iraq. Read full article > >
