Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Years ago, I heard soprano Renata Scotto give a master class to an unknown young soprano named Sondra Radvanovsky, who is now a star in her own right. One thing Scotto said has stuck with me. She was talking about conveying emotion onstage, and she pointed out that if a singer actually cries when her character is supposed to be crying, she will not be able to sing. Rick Santorum had two fairly strong debate performances this weekend. His poll numbers, however, have plateaued in New Hampshire and in South Carolina. It isn’t clear whether his lack of TV ad time or, in the case of New Hampshire voters, his emphasis on social issues (and high-visibility arguments at town halls) is at work. Perhaps it is a combination of these, or perhaps he still is a relative unknown to many voters. But it is not too late to pull it together and make a run at Mitt Romney in the South Carolina Republican primary. Far from it. Read full article > >

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

JUBA, Sudan — Aid groups are mounting a “major emergency operation” in rural South Sudan after tribe-on-tribe violence sent tens of thousands of people fleeing and killed an unknown number of people, the U.N. said Saturday. The U.N.’s humanitarian coordinator in South Sudan, Lise Grande, said aid groups are responding to a call for help from South Sudan’s central government after a column of 6,000 armed men from the Lou Nuer ethnic group marched into Pibor in Jonglei state to target the Murle community in late December and early January.
