Wizards’ season-ticket holders cling to optimism as team loses and prices fall

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

This is how chronic losing looked in the far corner of Verizon Center: In Mezzanine 413, as the Washington Wizards continued their slog through yet another lousy season, the upper-level section at a recent game was bereft of warm bodies and any buzz. Read full article > >

Wizards vs. 76ers: Washington’s struggles written on John Wall’s face in second straight loss to Philadelphia

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

As the Washington Wizards were introduced at Verizon Center on Saturday, John Wall already had the look of a defeated man. He slouched over in his chair, slapped five with his fellow starters, then trudged through a tunnel of teammates as his name was announced. The game hadn’t started, but his detachment was already palpable. Read full article > >

Capitals vs. Penguins: A rivalry with a big missing piece in Sidney Crosby

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Not long ago, Ovi vs. Sid was appointment viewing for fans and the rivalry the NHL used to market its game to the masses. But when the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins meet Wednesday at Verizon Center, anticipation will be low, relatively speaking. It’ll have more juice than, say, New Jersey at Edmonton, sure. But the feud no longer has the tension it once did, not with Sidney Crosby sidelined indefinitely with a concussion and Alex Ovechkin struggling to regain his MVP form. Read full article > >

Capitals vs. Penguins: Dale Hunter still looking for first win as Washington falls to Pittsburgh

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

The Pittsburgh Penguins inspire fiery performances from the Washington Capitals . Thursday night’s visit to Verizon Center, with new Coach Dale Hunter behind the Capitals’ bench , was no exception. Washington played an energetic, physical game against its bitter rivals, skating with spunk that was lacking in recent contests, but the performance didn’t result in a victory. Capitals vs. Rangers: Mistakes costly for Washington as Ruslan Fedotenko scores twice to lead New York

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

There wouldn’t be any bailout plan for the Washington Capitals on Friday afternoon as they became a product of their own mistakes. The New York Rangers took advantage of bad turnovers to capture a 6-3 win against a Capitals squad that tried to make overly complicated plays once it fell behind. Ruslan Fedotenko scored a pair of goals and Rangers captain Ryan Callahan recorded three assists to boost an 18-save performance by goaltender Henrik Lundqvist and overwhelm the home team. Goals by Troy Brouwer, John Carlson and Alex Ovechkin — his first tally of the season at Verizon Center — weren’t nearly enough in a game plagued by defensive miscues. Read full article > >

Touring behind their stellar collaboration album, “Watch the Throne,” Jay-Z and Kanye West wanted every retina in Verizon Center watching closely on Thursday night. It worked. This was one of the most visually stunning pop concerts assembled in years. Hulking video screens felt menacing, glowing with slow-motion footage of mushroom clouds and killer sharks. Beams of light sliced the air with a stately elegance not usually associated with lasers. West wore a black leather kilt and looked like the coolest man on Earth. Read full article > >

Washington Capitals look for a contender to stand out in competition for final roster spot

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Coach Bruce Boudreau entered training camp watching and waiting for one of several hopefuls to assert himself in the race for the lone spot up for grabs on the Washington Capitals ’ roster. Through the first 11 days of the preseason, he’s still waiting for a front-runner to emerge.
