Wizards vs. 76ers: Washington’s struggles written on John Wall’s face in second straight loss to Philadelphia

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

As the Washington Wizards were introduced at Verizon Center on Saturday, John Wall already had the look of a defeated man. He slouched over in his chair, slapped five with his fellow starters, then trudged through a tunnel of teammates as his name was announced. The game hadn’t started, but his detachment was already palpable. Read full article > >

Georgetown basketball is edged by Cincinnati for second straight defeat

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Trailing by two points as the clock wound down Monday night, the Georgetown men’s basketball team had one last chance. But Otto Porter stepped out of bounds along the baseline with 7.2 seconds remaining, allowing Sean Kilpatrick and Cincinnati to escape Verizon Center with a 68-64 victory . Porter’s misstep was, in many ways, a fitting conclusion to the Hoyas’ second consecutive defeat. It was their 17th turnover on a night when miscues and carelessness with the ball cost the hosts dearly. Cincinnati converted those turnovers into 20 points. Read full article > >

But no amount of exuberance, extra effort and impassioned play could prevent them from an all-too-familiar result. Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

On a night that should have centered around the Washington Capitals recording their fourth consecutive win and continuing on their recent roll of strong play , the team’s victory was overshadowed by a potential injury to leading scorer Nicklas Backstrom. Near the midway point of the third period in Washington’s 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night at Verizon Center, Backstrom was elbowed in the head by Rene Bourque. Verizon to charge customers $2 when they pay bills online or by phone

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

Well, it’s true. Verizon has confirmed to us that it’s adding the  $2 convenience fee  for paying your bill online or over the phone, and has posted a blurb in its News Center detailing the options available to someone who wants to avoid it. Obviously many customers use AutoPay, which avoids this hassle entirely, but we’re sure there will be plenty of customers frustrated by the fee when it goes live on January 15th. What’s unclear right now is if this constitutes a change in contract terms, which could potentially allow unsatisfied customers to hop off Verizon without a spendy ETF penalty. We’ve asked Verizon to clarify, and we also asked for some more details on exactly why online and robo-phone payments are more expensive to process than the “free” options they list — you know, the ones where you pay Verizon money, but don’t pay for the privilege. Wizards vs. Nets: Washington blows 21-point lead in season opener

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

For the first 17 minutes of the Washington Wizards ’ season debut, the fans at Verizon Center had to wonder if there were dramatically improved players in those impressive new red, white and blue uniforms. Fired up to kick off a season that was delayed by nearly two months, the Wizards provided a clinic on ball movement and defensive tenacity, and took a 21-point lead over the visiting New Jersey Nets. But the excitement and adrenaline provided from a flashy, laser and pinwheel introduction eventually subsided and the positive vibes came crashing down late in the third quarter when Nick Young fell to the floor, grimacing and later had to be carried to the locker room with a jammed left foot. Wizards’ Flip Saunders looking for ‘popcorn’ players as preseason debut approaches

Friday, December 16th, 2011

With a compressed training camp complete and the first preseason game set for Friday night, Washington Wizards Coach Flip Saunders was thinking popcorn during his news conference on media day at Verizon Center. Capitals vs. Flyers: Washington fails its latest test with 5-1 loss to Philadelphia at Verizon Center

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

If the Washington Capitals ’ meeting with the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night truly represented a measuring stick of their progress under Coach Dale Hunter , as players billed it in the hours leading up to the game, then they came up far short. Washington fell, 5-1, at Verizon Center in a game in which the offense became dormant for stretches, the defensive zone coverage eroded and the goaltenders allowed soft goals. Read full article > >

Capitals vs. Maple Leafs: Dennis Wideman nets first career hat trick, Washington wins on four power-play goals

Saturday, December 10th, 2011

At the end of the first period, Dennis Wideman had a goal and during the intermission his teammate Brooks Laich told him not to stop at the lone tally. The 28-year-old defenseman assured him that he didn’t plan on it, and by the conclusion of Friday night’s game Wideman made good on his word. Wideman recorded the first four-point night of his career and what appeared to be his first-ever hat trick, although the defenseman insisted that the third goal should have been credited to Laich, to lead the Capitals to a 4-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Verizon Center.
