At Army base, intimate and isolated, a soldier’s death brings intense emotion

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Two visitors, their arrivals separated by a few hours, stop at a grave in Section 6, Row 5 of the Veterans Cemetery here. The burial grounds are cold and quiet. A few miles away at Fort Campbell, thousands of soldiers are preparing for yet another tour in Afghanistan. Maryland football thought nothing could top dismal 2009 season, until this year

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Some Maryland players said it felt like a dark cloud hovered over their team house during the entire 2009 season. Heart-wrenching losses, unforeseen injuries and overall misfortune marred a 10-loss season that they felt was the worst football experience they would ever endure. Then came this season. A loss Saturday at North Carolina State would give Maryland (2-9, 1-6 ACC) its second 10-loss season in the past three years. All factors considered, some veterans have said this season has been worse than the 2009 season that nearly cost then-Coach Ralph Friedgen his job. Read full article > >

Veterans Day ceremonies honor nation’s heroes

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

Some stood amid headstones, fighting off chilly winds. Others gathered in chapels, in town squares and at marble halls. They were family members, friends and strangers, and they sought Friday to honor the sacrifices of the nation’s service members on Veterans Day. Among the most poignant and notable of ceremonies occurred in Arlington National Cemetery , where mourners left ornaments and trinkets by headstones and where hundreds of attendees — including President Obama — came to pay their respects.
